Position Description The Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) System is the first missile defense program deployed operationally to defend the homeland against ballistic missile attacks conducted by terrorists or rogue states. The system provides early detection and tracking during the boost phase, midcourse target discrimination, precision intercept and destruction of inbound ICBMs (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile) through force of hit-to-kill technology. Extensive ground and flight tests have demonstrated the system's successful performance against long-range ballistic missile targets. The selected candidate will apply an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify a lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions. Evaluate customer/operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. Prepare reliability and maintainability plans; identifies high cost high failure items for redesign (hardware and software); performs Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) and provides Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) data. The RAM&T engineer will support GMD trade studies to determine that RAM&T requirements can be achieved and efficiency maintained during the operation and maintenance of the GMD deployed systems. The RAM&T engineer will apply knowledge of Boeing reliability, availability, maintainability and testability (RAM&T) techniques, theories, applicable Boeing/industry standards, processes and company polices to ensure that the GMD systems will perform their intended functions within acceptable limits. The selected candidate should have a good working knowledge of failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis, including system, sub-system, functional (electrical/mechanical), and component level. Knowledge of Integrated Product Definition and System Engineering practices (e.g., source selection, risk management, trade studies, affordability, corrective actions), including specific reliability, availability, maintainability, and testability (RAM&T) integrated product team (IPT) responsibilities is required The selected candidate will apply knowledge of mission reliability, mission/system availability and dependability to verify product performance in the mission environment. Knowledge of database reduction, data mapping, and data mining is desired. Knowledge of reliability, availability, maintainability, and testability (RAM&T) modeling techniques (e.g., Boolean algebra, conditional probability, Monte Carlo simulation, Markov matrices, dependence modeling, fault simulation) and theory is desired. The ability to adjust priorities to multiple demands and unanticipated events as well as adjust decisions and actions to new information is required. The ability to be flexible in response to changing circumstances or conditions, be receptive to feedback and coaching, and be resilient after failures or disappointments is required. The selected should have the ability to attend to and verify the accuracy and completeness of detailed information. This also includes the ability to identify missing or inconsistent information or data. Listens effectively; demonstrate understanding; clarify meaning for others; speak with clarity and precision; able to communicate with a diverse audience; write clearly and concisely.
