The Public Benefit Paralegal is trained to provide information and legal assistance on a range of public benefit issues including CalWORKs, Social Security, Food Stamps, IHSS, unemployment insurance and General Relief. In addition, under attorney supervision, paralegals handle their own caseloads, represent clients at administrative hearings, provide community education presentations and assist in policy advocacy and litigation, as required.

Qualifications: Background in Social Services, working knowledge of CalWORKs and/or Social Security and Food Stamps strongly preferred. Able to handle heavy client contact. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent research and analytical skills. Strong communication skills (oral/written) in English and either Armenian, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, or Spanish coupled with patience and sensitivity with people in crisis situations required.


Program Description: Neighborhood Legal Services (NLS-LA) is one of Los Angeles County's leading public interest law offices and has been the primary legal aid program serving the San FernandoValley for 40 years and the San Gabriel/Pomona Valleys since 2001. The NLS staff of 100+, including 40 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights, and environmental justice. The NLS - LA program offices are located in the cities of Glendale, Pacoima and El Monte.
