Duties and Responsibilities: The Administrative Law Advocacy Group handles hearings, litigation and policy advocacy work related to a wide range of public benefit programs, including CalWORKs, Food Stamps, General Relief, SSI overpayment and termination cases, and engages in affirmative legal and policy work in high impact areas. Responsible for policy work, special staff projects and substantive legal work. Handles quality control, assistance and supervision of representation at hearings and in court, and opportunities for providing direct representation. Develops training and resource materials and trains advocates. May be asked to perform other duties and responsibilities to meet program priorities.

Qualifications: Creative attorney preferably with management and litigation experience in administrative proceedings and litigating in California Courts; in-depth knowledge of public benefit programs and law required; well-developed communication skills – writing and oral advocacy with ability to communicate effectively with clients, staff, community organizations, attorneys and the public. A proven leader with a demonstrated track record and commitment to working with the low-income community. Four or more years of experience in government benefits is strongly preferred, however, we will consider exceptional candidates with less experience Ability to conduct training programs for lawyers and manage advocacy projects supervising legal work. Bilingual skills in Armenian , Chinese, or Spanish, are highly preferred. Membership in the California Bar is required.

Program Description: Neighborhood Legal Services (NLS) is one of Los Angeles County's leading public interest law offices and has been the primary legal aid program serving the San FernandoValley for 40 years and the San Gabriel/Pomona Valleys since 2001. The NLS staff of 100+, including 40 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights, and environmental justice. The NLS - LA headquarters is located in the city of Glendale, with branch offices in Pacoima and El Monte, CA.
