Tax Managers will be assigned to oversee specific functional or business activities. In general, these managers will:
- Maintain primary responsibility for the completion of all tax returns within the U.S.
- Initiate, plan, lead, develop, approve and execute compliance policies for the company's taxes and ensure that all filing requirements are completed on a timely and accurate basis for the regulated and unregulated businesses
- Supervise the Principal Tax Advisors, Senior Tax Advisors, Tax Advisors and Administrative Associates
- Manage the tax audits of the Company and its subsidiaries
- Provide tax planning opportunities & advice to the business units and maintain the visibility of Tax Services within the Sempra Energy family of companies
Provide high-level research
- Make decisions pursuant to experience and knowledge
Responsibilities:
Manage the completion of the tax returns for the company and all its subsidiaries, including partnerships, exempt organizations, trusts, pension plans and limited liability companies.
Manage the completion of estimated and tax return tax payments for all entities and manage the allocation of tax liabilities to all entities on a stand-alone basis.
Identify, quantify and communicate tax planning strategies for all entities, including researching and developing the most tax efficient action plan and/or ownership structure.
Analyze and quantify the impact to the Company of current and proposed tax legislation.
Coordinate and review the Company's responses to auditor's information data requests and notice of proposed adjustments to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Manage the preparation and review of arguments related to protested audit adjustments and support the Director of Tax/VP-Corporate Tax in managing the appeals conferences and in the negotiation of settlement agreements.
Develop studies and standards to determine filing and compliance responsibilities created by activities of the Company and its subsidiaries.
Manage the completion of any financial statement tax disclosures.
Manage the tax input for the financial plans for all entities and projects.
Be "at the table" during planning meetings and develop & maintain business contacts within the Company.
Supervise the Principal Tax Advisors, Senior Tax Advisors Tax Advisors and Administrative Associates, and be a mentor in their professional development.
Perform administrative & supervisory tasks such as performance reviews, coaching and guidance, recruiting, etc.
Skills / Competencies:
Extensive knowledge of tax law and regulations
Strong interpersonal/communications skills
Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and tax accounting methods
Well Developed research skills for determining applicability of laws, regulations and court cases
Understanding of regulatory and utility ratemaking concepts and their interrelationship with tax
Ability to develop creative, defensible, advantageous tax results within the boundaries of tax laws
Excellent organizational and leadership attributes
Ability to delegate and balance competing workloads
Proficiency in computer software applications including Microsoft Excel and Word
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Tax, Accounting or Business Administration required or equivalent experience
Masters degree in Tax or Accounting and/or CPA license preferred
8 - 10+ years experience in a large CPA firm/corporate tax department required
