Project Bread’s Child Nutrition Outreach Program (CNOP) works to increase participation in the School Breakfast and Summer Food Service Programs under a contract from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). This work is based at Project Bread and fits into a larger effort by the organization to eradicate hunger in Massachusetts called the Massachusetts Child Hunger Initiative (MCHI). MCHI targets underutilized federal nutrition programs as a way to prevent and ultimately end hunger in Massachusetts. In conjunction with increasing participation in these programs, Project Bread and MCHI are especially interested in improving the quality of school and summer meals.

Major responsibilities:

1. Expand participation of Massachusetts children in the School Breakfast Program while examining ways to improve meal quality using the following strategies:

A. Work with superintendents, principals, school food service directors, parents and teachers in targeted communities to implement strategies proven to increase school breakfast participation.
B. Work with principals and food service directors to adopt Project Bread’s Better Breakfast Initiative nutritional guidelines and improve the quality of school meals.
C. Help develop outreach materials to support the School Breakfast Program.
D. Assist with School Breakfast and Summer Food Service Program outreach mailings to community partners, school administrations, and program recipients.
E. Provide technical assistance and support regarding the cost effectiveness of the School Breakfast Program to school administrators and school food service directors.
F. Work as needed with local community networks to further School Breakfast outreach goals.

2. Increase participation of Massachusetts’ children in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) while examining ways to improve meal quality using the following strategies:

A. Work with local individuals, school officials, other public entities and officials, local nonprofit organizations, businesses, parents, and others to assess the need for SFSP expansion in targeted communities.
B. Implement strategies for recruiting new SFSP sponsors and maximize the number of sites they will sponsor.
C. Provide technical assistance to first-time sponsors during startup and operation of the program.

Skills:
Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, focus in nutrition preferred, with a minimum of
three years relevant experience
· Experience in non-profit or community-based work required
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
· Ability to multi-task
· Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Access to a car
· Spanish proficiency preferred
