Systems Development Manager

I'd like to clarify an important matter: in this position, we're
looking for candidates who have been in the business long enough to
manage a department, but who have not been
in the business so long that, like the CIO (me), their technical
skills cannot keep pace with the requirements of being a manager.
This implies a mid-career profile, a technical person who moved out
in front but can still "do it": proven manager, but still technical
enthusiast and practitioner; at home in a
strategy discussion, but also reviewing the application code; second-
nature about the concepts, but also second-nature about the
technologies.
Wants to be a CTO one day, not a CIO. Not too junior; not too senior.

You have run a C++/Linux development team in a growing company. You
understand how to translate senior management vision into actionable
systems development efforts.
You know that execution separates successful companies from the rest,
and you have a track record of leading projects to timely, elegant
results.

You understand, and embrace, the peculiar techniques required to
motivate and develop technical talents and personalities.
You interact effectively both down and up the chain of command.
You have come up through the technical positions yourself, and have,
as a result, a superior conceptual understanding of how to do things
right, a certain technical wisdom.

Still, you understand that wisdom sometimes comes from doing things
wrong the first time, and you give your people latitude to learn.
