Click Here to Apply OnlineEsperanza Immigrant Rights Project of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., is a non-profit law firm which represents, educates and finds pro bono counsel for immigrants in removal proceedings in Immigration Court. Esperanza provides services primarily to immigrants who are in detention, including adults in the custody of ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement), adults in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department and children in the custody of ORR (the Office of Refugee Resettlement). Esperanza has provided legal services to detained immigrants in Los Angeles for over 10 years, although previously as the Los Angeles branch office of CLINIC (Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.) Esperanza recently won a contract for a new program to provide legal education services to immigrants detained at Men’s Central Jail, one of the Los Angeles County criminal detention facilities.
Responsibilities:
Esperanza seeks a full-time lead detention attorney, for a salaried position with benefits. This attorney will take primary responsibility for stakeholder relationship development at Men’s Central Jail; provide large group legal orientation presentations about immigration law, with emphasis on the consequences of criminal convictions at Men’s Central Jail; provide individual legal orientations at Men’s Central Jail; provide small-group workshops at Men’s Central Jail; provide legal education on immigration law to the criminal bar; and provide direct representation to a discrete number of clients fighting removal in Immigration Court.
Skills:
Qualifications:
(1) Juris Doctor degree; (2) Active, Valid State Bar License (of any State, as Immigration Law is federal); (3) Second language (Spanish, Chinese or Vietnamese) highly preferred; (4) Passage of both the Catholic Charities and the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, Men’s Central Jail, background clearance check; (5) Experience in immigration law, criminal law or public interest law preferred.
