Our organization delivers the Dev Tools, Components and Embedded specific features for OEMs, ISVs & IHVs as well as internal teams that build and deliver solutions based on the Vista Embedded and XP Embedded platforms. Our mission is to provide the Windows experience on devices that the Windows Client/Server skus can't operate- like diskless systems, or with a 32MB footprint for example. We have a stable, very profitable product and we're continually innovating in this space. We're also a small team with big ambitions; this means you will be empowered with the responsibility and an opportunity to make a great impact in the Mobile Embedded Division and a significant impact in the lives of the end users of our devices. This is not just a job and it's not just an adventure; it's also an opportunity for you to be one of the leaders on the product team as an IC (more explained below) What I'm Looking For: I need strong problem solvers, you will be delivering solutions not just for the Test team but also our internal and external partners. I also need more senior SDETs on the team, you will have a significant impact on the direction of the product and our internal partners. For instance, you will be working with various test technology teams in Windows, MSR and other BGs to ensure they're delivering solutions that 'just work' with Embedded as they do with the rest of the Windows SKUs. I'm also looking for more engineers with a desire to be a leader on the team as an individual contributor. The more senior SDETs on the team will be expected to help demonstrate to the more junior SDETs that there is a great value proposition by remaining in Test and moving up the ladder. Accomplishing this means you'll be taking on big tasks that span across business groups and have executive level visibility. Sometimes there's opportunity to travel and engage directly with OEM devs if that's interesting to you. Let me tell you a little about the Componentization Team - They work on most features in Windows. Though they don't need to be experts in these features they are experts in understanding the dependencies that features may have on other features. These SDETs deliver the tools to analyze those dependencies and help understand how to logically group the features resources in a manner that enable Embedded OEMs to ship versions of Windows that have smaller footprint and smaller surface attack area and faster boot perf than 'normal' Windows. For Vista, this team is also delivering the automation and tools required to port Windows feature test automation to run on Vista Embedded. The goal here is to enable existing feature automation to exercise the feature code on the smallest bootable version of Vista possible. The OEM customers will use the a suite of tools from a separate Tools team to design/build/assemble a custom operating system that is eventually deployed to their embedded device. That's the greatest challenge this team faces, delivering on the expectations of a Vista based embedded operating system but without all the baggage of the full Vista operating system. The engineers working on our Componentization team are generally happiest working with the Operating System, they're understand or can learn how to debug in User mode and Kernel mode. Getting that embedded developer experience nailed to the point where you can assemble any custom flavor of Windows you desire but still leveraging the same Win32 API that ships with Vista is a significant feat. This team may also deliver an Embedded Test Kit to OEMs that enable them to test some of the OS features and drivers on their device. What's Cool About Our Team: One of the coolest aspects of this job is the camaraderie and small team atmosphere. But the best part is the variety because you'll develop a working knowledge of many Windows features; you'll develop new technologies and suite of tools to address concerns unique to the Embedded space. You also get to interact with customers at times through a variety of means, everything from MSDN whitepapers to on-site customer visits or blogging. Another cool aspect to the job is the chance to develop solutions for a wide array of markets and HW platforms - like Single Board Computers, Cash Registers, Slot Machines, Arcade Machines, Thin Clients, DVRs, Set Top Boxes, TV-PCs, Medical Heart Monitoring devices, etc... Our team is focused on creating a great work-life balance and currently is working from one day home every other week. Feel free to schedule an informational to find out mor
