Click Here to Apply OnlineGeneral Job Description: Alternatives for Youth's (AFY) mission is to help youth succeed academically and in life throughout the SVVSD. We have a continuum of services from prevention programs - homework clubs and summer time program for youth; intervention - conflict resolution and anger management for middle and high school students and their families; and rehabilitation - expulsion school for middle and high school students who have been expelled from the SVVSD.
GOAL: The goal of this position, as the Program Director of the NorthStar program, is to teach middle and high school youth life skills class, such as conflict resolution, anger management, communication, self esteem and other such topics. You would work with high risk youth that are at risk of expulsion due to behavior issues in school. You would teach the Life Skills in the classroom at several middle and/or high schools in the SVVSD. You would also teach Life Skills to students and their families in the evening, with students referred by the school system, judicial system, and/or self-referred. These classes would be conducted during the SVVSD calendar, ie not in the summer time.
General Qualifications: Experience working with high risk youth and their families; experience working in the classroom, or similar environment; ability to work and make decisions independently with minimal supervision; well organized and detail oriented and have a strong work ethic; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse populations including youth and parents/guardians, staff, peers, supervisors, representatives of cooperating agencies, and school personnel; working knowledge of computers, MS Office and database management; ability to deal with information in a confidential manner; excellent written and verbal communications; bilingual/bicultural Spanish/English preferred. Duties and Responsibilities: Work with high risk youth and their families Teach middle and/or high school students that are at risk of expulsion from school due to behavior issues Teach life skills daily or several days per week within a school classroom setting Teach students and their parents life skills in the evenings Students are referred by the SVVSD, judicial system and/or self referred Work closely with school personnel regarding the needs and issues of the students in your program Develop a strong working relationship with the students Develop a strong working relationship with the students' parents/guardians Follow-up with the student outside of the classroom as needed Work closely with the school counselors and teachers in regards to each student Advise students and and parents/guardians about appropriate resources available to them Maintain clear and complete records for each student/family Gather appropriate information and keep records for evaluation for AFY and SVVSD Work with Microsoft Office and maintain database of program information Attend appropriate trainings Attend monthly AFY staff meetings Meet regularly with AFY Executive Director
