Higher Education currently has an outstanding opportunity for a dynamic Sr. Production Editor (Project Manager) in our Humanities, Social Science and World Language (HSSL) segment. This position is based out of San Francisco, CA . The Senior Production Editor (Project Manager) will provide high quality, accurate, timely, and cost effective production editing and project management from manuscript through bound books to ensure market focused production and sustained revenue growth. Working independently, focus will be primarily on AAA and A priority titles as well as first editions on accelerated schedules. Mentor less experienced colleagues in book production and production editing. Serve on department and company committees and work on special projects as assigned. Responsibilities: Plan, budget, schedule, and manage production of assigned titles from manuscript through bound books. Ensure all projects meet set quality, cost, and delivery requirements. Manage outside full service vendor as necessary to complete production on select number of assigned titles. Follow procedures for work with full service vendor. Before turnover, analyze project proposals and develop tentative production plans based on schedule, complexity, and budget. Evaluate text and art manuscript for production readiness. Develop a production plan and determine all production needs, including copyediting requirements. Create design survey and participate in design review. Establish production schedules with the assistance of all book team members. Alert book team members to any apparent permissions issues, content problems, or inconsistencies. Summarize and communicate key decisions and ideas to other team members. Negotiate with and hire editorial freelancers, establish rates, set schedules, and monitor and evaluate their performance to ensure quality, schedule, and cost. Coordinate freelancer and vendor activities, anticipating and solving problems. Check all stages of manuscript and proof. Process all invoices on a timely basis. Serve as primary author contact and coordinate all author tasks and scheduling. Monitor all costs throughout the production process and report on and resolve potential or actual budget overruns in a timely manner. Maintain deadlines on all paperwork, including transmittal forms, revised schedules, transmittal budgets, page-ending notices, pagination guides, page-ending budgets, and project audits. Senior Responsibilities: Provide author with manuscript preparation guidelines; evaluate sample manuscript during the development stage. Attend pre-production project meetings, launches, and signings as requested. Work with Manager to establish and review procedures, increase productivity, enhance department workflow, decrease costs, improve quality, and enhance communication within the department. Serve on department committees to manage and maintain special initiatives or department activities. Participate in educational seminars with to help Editorial develop competencies in the production process. 3 - 5+ years as Production Editor or equivalent, with at least two years of college textbook experience. Proven ability to make effective decisions on projects in a consistent and independent fashion; to use good judgment in determining which decisions require immediate attention and which ones need team input and further consideration. Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as demonstrated effective negotiation skills. Advanced knowledge of copyediting and proofreading.
