GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety, and provides offenders with secure and humane treatment that gives them every opportunity for rehabilitation. We now seek correctional officers for our institutions: Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, Wyoming Womens Center in Lusk, Wyoming Honor Conservation & Boot Camp in Newcastle, Wyoming Honor Farm in Riverton and Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington. This position is essential for maintaining safety and security of the institution and is considered a Law Enforcement position receiving the 20-year retirement package. This is an entry-level position and career/growth opportunities are available. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: In order to maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires enforcement of rules and regulations; responding to post orders of varied assigned posts; supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pre-social behavior; assisting in a variety of searches; observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations; conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates; assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers and inmate living areas that monitor inmate movements; becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions; assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required; assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations; assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the processing of released inmates; attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level; assisting in training and orientation of newly hired Correctional Officers. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Requires an ability to learn security measures, techniques and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution; good work ethic; skill in motivation and initiative in completing assigned duties; skill in interpersonal relationships; skill in oral and written communications; skill in comprehension of oral and written instructions; ability to be fair, firm, tactful, objective, tolerant, even-tempered, reliable, precise, conscientious and perceptive; ability to work in a stressful work environment; ability to work overtime as required; ability to work on any shift, holidays and weekends. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED, 18 years old and older and an US citizen. Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen and other pre-employment testing prior to appointment. All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and become POST Certified within one year of Initial appointment.
