With the only 24-hour multi-lingual hotline and shelter program for battered Asian women, the Center provides counseling and advocacy to Asian battered women and children who have witnessed domestic violence.
The goal of the NYAWC temporary residential program is to provide a safe environment that will support the recovery of survivors and their children from domestic violence and will aid in their reintegration into the community.
The intent of our residential programs is to be salubrious: we promote strong relationships between mother and child and supportive adult to adult interactions. We reinforce positive behavior and healthy attitudes. We assist residents in gaining essential skills and aim to advance psychological functioning.
The Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of his/ her primary shelter, a 20-bed facility, as well as for providing managerial support to the operations of NYAWC’s other shelter when needed. This includes supervising and training staff; ensuring the facility is in good condition and working with external contractors as needed; helping the Director ensure compliance with operating regulations; administrating finances and inventory; and other tasks.
In addition, the Assistant Director is responsible for developing and maintaining a more ameliorative shelter model of practice; helping shelter staff deal with emotionally troubled and behaviorally challenging clients – including liaisons with non-residential staff and outside organizations; and occasionally screening clients for admission.
The Assistant Director will also be involved other projects, including representing NYAWC at meetings or events with other organizations, helping the Director and Executive Director with strategic decisions about the shelters and agency, and managing NYAWC’s hotline.
