GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Serves as first line supervisor, reporting to the Security Captain; oversees daily correctional functions, including serving as one of three staff team leaders in charge of a team of security staff. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for performance evaluations and other personnel actions; oversees security staff training, including acting as trainer in designated areas; serves as security component of unit management team, conducting monthly hall meetings and providing training to inmates concerning institution culture and daily behavioral expectations; analyzes inmate behavior and makes recommendations for regular housing assignments congruent with classification as a member of the Housing Commission; participates in management/classification teams and special review teams which overview and recommend inmate housing placements due to irregular behaviors and physical and mental health issues; responsible for daily shift management, including proper staffing levels, resource placement and utilization and assignment to emergency functions; conducts security audits to ensure daily safety and security of institution. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of Department and Institution specific policies and procedures; knowledge of prisoner behaviors and principles of offender management; knowledge of concepts and contemporary practices in group management and control in correctional institutions. Skill in oral and written communications; skill in supervisor/subordinate interactions; skill in work management; skill in leadership, planning and staff utilization; skill in identifying safety and security problems; skill in investigation and interrogation processes; skill in the ability to make decisions and take corrective action. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED, 18 years old or older and an US citizen, plus six years of work experience in correctional security including three years of work experience at either the level of a correctional sergeant or corporal OR as a supervisor with responsibilities for directly supervising subordinate employees. Candidates must successfully pass background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, Physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen and other pre-employment testing prior to appointment. All successful candidates will be required to complete an initial training period and become POST Certified within one year of initial appointment.
