Click Here to Apply OnlineWithout technical guidance the Research Associate plans and executes advanced research studies in his/her own or related scientific specialty. Makes significant and continuing contribution to designing research programs. Completes agreed upon research objectives independently and with the sophistication so as to be recognized within the company as an expert in his/her field. Stays abreast of developments within own field of specialization and applies this state-of-the-art knowledge in recommending innovative research approaches coaching subordinates and peers and meeting Divisional objectives.
The Research Associate communicates progress and results of program to Merck Research Laboratory (MRL) management by issuing periodic reports or preparing required documents needed for regulatory approval of a compound.
Prepares basic patent applications in support of patent coverage of divisional research efforts.
Establishes objectives and action plans which are designed to effectively and efficiently meet those objectives.
Plans and schedules daily computing research and reporting activities in order to meet established timetables and objectives.
Develops the technical expertise that enables proprietary positions to be established. Participates in strategic research planning at the department level.
May have active involvement in recruiting and staffing of scientific personnel/consultants.
Enhances individual and corporate reputation through one or more of the following activities: Preparing and publishing or presenting technical papers to internal and external audiences. Actively participating in professional societies technical associations national standards committees etc.
As required understands and compiles with Safety Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Company Affirmative Action policies and procedures.
Ensures that all subordinates reporting to him/her have been instructed or given explanation of the same.
Participates in recommended educational and training opportunities to further develop technical competence in his/her area of assigned responsibility. Recommends training for subordinates as appropriate.
A concentration in one of the following studies is required; mathematics computational biology computer science statistics or another area applying math statistics and/or computer science to biology biotechnology chemistry genetics biochemistry or pharmacology.
The position requires advanced and thorough scientific knowledge related to the above-mentioned areas of expertise.
Must have the ability to plan recommend and complete research programs of major divisional importance.
The incumbent must be capable of motivating and training junior scientists and offering counsel to peers within the Division.
Experience in several and extensive knowledge in one or more of the following areas is required: discrete and numerical algorithms machine learning and automated pattern recognition signal and/or image processing computational biology mathematical analysis and modeling differential equations mathematical programming probability stochastic processes scientific software engineering optimization parallel algorithms complexity theory or knowledge representation.
Mature communication and interpersonal skills are required.
