This position is responsible for formulating, defending and advancing Unum's business interests in the federal public policy arena. It involves effectively managing corporate resources to improve and protect profitability, competitiveness, and shareholder value by achieving favorable legislative and regulatory outcomes at the national level, in the White House and in the federal agencies. It is also charged with building, maintaining, and providing leadership and close working relationships with a wide array of national organizations, including elected officials, regulators, customers, industry and trade associations, governmental agencies, business groups, and non-profit organizations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Advocate Unum's business interests:
* With Federal agencies, the United States Congress, industry associations, and public interest groups.
* By sharing responsibility for all Unum's government relations/lobbying in the United States Congress, other governmental agencies, and trade associations
* By managing strong relationships with government and trade association staff, and negotiating independently and decisively for Unum's business interests.

Skills:
* Undergraduate degree required; graduate or law degree preferred* Minimum of 10 years combination government relations, political experience and/or disability industry/employee benefits experience* Strong business and political acumen* Extensive knowledge and understanding of federal political systems* Solid knowledge and understanding of insurance issues and products* Sound analytical skills* Excellent oral and written communication skills, with particular expertise in advocacy writing* Exceptional leadership, negotiation and conflict resolution skills* Exceptional ability to think and act quickly to make independent decisions, often in adversarial proceedings under considerable pressure.* Ability to work closely with product and corporate areas on a broad array of issues* Broad understanding of Unum's corporate philosophy and goals* Must be results-oriented* Ability to manage multitude of tasks simultaneously.Unum offers world-class training and development, generous compensation and benefits packages, and a culture built on employee ideas.
