GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Cardiovascular Sonography Program Director assumes responsibility for the entire Cardiovascular Sonography program. Duties include overseeing the design, development, and assessment of program curricula; scheduling and staffing classes; hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluating program instructors; recommending the purchasing of supplies and equipment; assisting with the coordination of externship sites, including student placement and performance assessment; developing community contacts and chairing advisory board meetings; teaching program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes; academic advising and career related counseling for students; monitoring student retention and identifying and assist at-risk students; maintaining competency and currency in cardiovascular sonography research, trends, issues, and practices, including effective teaching strategies and assessment methods; and providing support for program and institutional initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee the design, development, revision, and assessment of Cardiovascular Sonography curricula, including course objectives, instructional methods, learning outcomes, projects, and assessment measures.
  • Actively engage in retention activities including documented communication with both students and administration regarding attendance and progress.
  • Assist students with course registration and academic advice, and mentor instructors on effective academic counseling techniques.
  • Address student concerns in a timely manner.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate instructors; and maintain the continuity and relevance of the program curriculum by meeting regularly with the instructors.
  • Recommend lab equipment, supplies, library materials, textbooks, and other items for purchase and use; monitor the safety and quality of instructional materials.
  • Assist the Externship Coordinator with the establishment and coordination of externship sites; monitor student placement and performance at externship sites.
  • Provide annual documentation of continuing professional growth in one s field.
  • Attend regularly scheduled program meetings, academic in-service workshops, and college-wide faculty meetings.
  • Chair Cardiovascular Sonography advisory board meetings at least twice a year, and develop community contacts that can assist with job placement, externship site set-up, community involvement, and/or student orientation.
  • Manage special projects as formally assigned by the Director of Education (including, but not limited to new student orientation programs and open houses, assistance with accreditation preparation, campus events, and supervision of staff).
  • Adhere to and publicly support academic policies and procedures, including but not limited to the faculty handbook and catalog.

QUALIFICATIONS:

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Documented expertise, knowledge, and skills in cardiovascular sonography principles and practices and expertise in interpersonal and oral presentation/written communication skills as demonstrated by data sheet, diplomas, degrees, transcripts, certifications, CVs/Resumes, and in personal interview. The Program Director must assure achievement of the program s goals and outcomes, and is responsible for all aspects of the program, including the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development and general effectiveness of the program. The Program Director must provide supervision, administration and coordination of the instructional staff in the academic and clinical phases of the educational program.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 2 years of industry experience working in cardiovascular sonography or in a related healthcare setting. Administrative or supervisory experience preferred.

EDUCATION

Completion of an accredited associate s degree program recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation is required; candidates with bachelor s degrees or higher are preferred. The Program Director must be registered in at least one of the cardiovascular specialties for which they assume a primary teaching role.
