As part of Mercks Global Vaccine Technology & Engineering organization (GVTE) Viral Vaccine Technology & Engineering (VVTE-Durham) is seeking a highly motivated individual as Senior Scientist/Engineer to partner with Manufacturing Operations Quality Operations Automation and Bio-Sterile Validation as a member of the demonstration team for the new Durham Vaccine Bulk Facility. Viral VTE provides technical and validation support for the manufacture of Mercks viral vaccines at Durham with the team initially focused on the demonstration of a new bulk facility supporting VARIVAX (Chicken Pox Vaccine) and ZOSTAVAX (Shingles vaccine) manufacturing.

The individual will be responsible for the transfer of cell culture production processes between commercial sites and provide support during the start-up of a new bulk vaccine manufacturing facility in Durham NC. As part of the start-up team this individual will lead upstream process/technical support for media preparation and cell expansion related process start-up activities (including relevant equipment qualification). The ideal candidate will possess hands on experience with cell culture activities as well as an understanding of the science behind cell culture operations. However individuals with a significant foundation in scientific or engineering knowledge outside the specific area of cell culture and disposable technology (i.e. roller bottle cell culture factories) processing will be considered.

Involvement with analytical studies associated with the development of new components products processes systems and facilities is expected and the position requires significant interdisciplinary or cross-functional interactions with manufacturing quality laboratory and automation groups.

Primary Activities:


1. Support process start-up for cell expansion and media preparation/formulation including relevant equipment qualification.

2. Develop relevant manufacturing/process procedures and associated training/coaching to ensure successful process transfer and long-term reliability

3. Assists in the performance qualification and process validation phases of the start-up in aseptic processing areas for media preparation and cell expansion as needed to support start-up activities through process validation and licensure.

4. Assist with troubleshooting and resolution of process-related biomanufacturing problems. Effectively develop and implement corrective actions to unplanned (atypical) manufacturing events to ensure a consistent and reliable supply of vaccine products.

5. Identifies and implements technology-driven productivity improvements with focus on maintaining process consistency and decreasing manufacturing costs.
