Conducts a variety of polysomnography tests. Prepares, calibrates, interfaces, and operates all equipment used in polysomnographic procedures. Explains procedures, and positions patient to insure patient comfort for optimal recording of EEG. Monitors patient, diagnostic equipment, recording and video equipment throughout the night; obtains artifact-free data and tracings. Removes electrodes and transducers from patient upon termination of study. Distinguishes artifactual and cerebral sources of encephalographic findings. Recognizes sleep apnea, sleep movements, nocturnal seizures, and parasomnias such as nocturnal myocionus and rapid eye movement (REM) behavior; makes adjustments in recording parameters to optimize performance of sleep studies. Instructs trainees and fellows in polysomnography techniques. Performs operator maintenance of EEG equipment. Calibrates and maintains in proper working order complex respiratory equipment such as mechanical ventilators, oxygen analyzers, pulse oximeters, capnographs, respirometers, blood gas analyzers, co-oximeters, and percussors. Applies a good understanding of the basics of aseptic technique to avoid infection of patients and self, utilizing universal precautions. Maintains established stock levels of supplies and assists with the ordering and pick up. Greets patient and reviews study process. Prepares and organizes patient rooms with supplies and equipment required for appropriate polysomnographic procedure and electrode application. THIS POSITION IS IN THE BARGAINING UNIT

Compensation: $44,382 to $57,699 per annum

Experience: Eligibility: Department of Veterans Affairs Qualifications Standards (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G27) for GS-649 series applies and may be reviewed in the Human Resources Management Service Office.
Specialized Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided a knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs
Certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desirable.

Applicants must demonstrate through their experience or education that they possess the following published KSAs (from VA Handbook 5005) for the grade at which they wish to apply (and grades below that grade if applicable).
1. Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders.
2. Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form.
3. Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action.
4. Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians
