Responsible for assisting students while safely loading and unloading. Wheelchair loading must follow manufacturers safety procedures using the lift. Must know how to operate manually if necessary. Must identify and operate a variety of manufacturers lifts. 3. Must consistently monitor students with varying special needs. Assess any medical or behavioral situation and take safety steps accordingly. Students vary on medical and behavioral diagnosis. Exact diagnosis may be unknown to driver and assistant. Must be able to identify problems and act quickly, safely and accordingly. 4. Should know the different wheelchair structures and tie-down attachment points to be able to safely secure the wheelchair on board the bus. Without compromising wheelchair structure, identify execute emergency release mechanism. Know how to properly adjust a students safety vest and its attachments. Proper positioning of student adjustments of wheelchair and car seats. 5. Must be physically and emotionally able to cope with the situations encountered while transporting students with ambulatory appliance, restraint systems, students with difficult behavior, and students who are unable to speak or have limited verbal skills. Be compassionate, understanding, and tolerant of students physical conditions, students lack of body function control and odors. 6. Have the ability to assist with students needs while the vehicle is moving. 7. Must meet all district/department physical standards, including but not limited to the following: work with in a moving vehicle for 3 to 4 hours; work in any existing weather conditions; maneuver heavy wheelchairs (manual and electric) total weight up to 800 lbs., student/chair combined up ramps, over curbs and around the inside of a bus without assistance; bend, reach, squat and secure wheelchair tie-downs. 8. Clean up and properly dispose of body fluids in a designated disposal site. .
