1. Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards. 2. Provides continuous assessment, consults with other team members as required and provides nursing care which demonstrates patient centered/patient valued care. Exercises independent judgment in providing nursing care. 3. Serves as a patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, patient rights, confidentiality, religious, and cultural preferences. Maintains positive working relationships with all PHHS internal and external customers, employees, etc. Serves as a resource person for patients and other healthcare team members. May serve as a resource person for specific clinical patient care issues. Provides patient care educational information and training to patient and family members. 4. Maintains and implements knowledge of all the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, laws; i.e., JCAHO, Nurse Practice Act, etc. that impact or govern nursing practice and ensures that the hospital and PHHS are in compliance. Maintains and updates knowledge of sanitation, infection control, safety , supplies, equipment, appropriate utilization of supplies and materials. 5. Completes appropriate documentation and maintains accurate and timely entries and notations in the medical records and hospital documents that meet the standards, goals, and objectives of the assigned department and PHHS. 6. Follows established protocols and identifies ways to improve work process and improve patient and customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals and mission of the assigned area and PHHS. 7. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in nursing practice by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals and/or actively participating in professional organizations. Maintains State of Texas Licensure in Nursing, plus additional required licensures/certifications. Integrates knowledge gained as appropriate into current work practices. 8. May work with other staff in providing direction to non nursing staff. Participates in information exchanges with nursing and other PHHS staff that support the standards, missions, goals and objectives of the department and PHHS. May serve as a preceptor or trainer to newer nursing staff members. May serve on rotation as Charge Nurse. 9. May serve on various interdisciplinary committees as assigned.
Required Skills: 1. Education/Experience: Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing plus have two years of nursing in Med/Surg or ICU experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Certification/Registration/Licensure: Must have current registration or a valid temporary permit with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card. Must pass PHHS Medication Examination during initial Nursing Orientation. May be required to have additional specialty certifications. 3. Skills or Special Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and possess good oral and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing and ancillary staff. Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors. As applicable, will be required to demonstrate acceptable knowledge of nursing standards of care for specialty/critical care area.
