Will review and analyze the online and print publications of the world's largest animal rights organization and its international affiliates regarding the publications' legal propriety. Identify and rectify issues regarding legal propriety through the provision of legal advice to the organization and its affiliates, particularly in the areas of intellectual property (IP), libel and defamation, and the distinctions between the organization's affiliates (including advising personnel on the importance of updating and editing publications to maintain those distinctions). In formulating and communicating such advice, balance the legal risk assessment and analysis against the need for the organization's affiliates to carry out their animal protection missions effectively, and work with client departments to find satisfactory amended or alternative solutions where legal obstacles are met. Conduct legal research on a variety of publishing and IP legal issues in the U.S. and act as the primary liaison with external counsel regarding these issues in the jurisdictions of the affiliates listed above. Train employees of the organization and its affiliates in basic publication and IP legal principles and procedures. Formulate, draft, maintain, and update protocols and procedures to streamline and ensure adherence to the legal review process. Assist the general counsel and vice president of corporate affairs in other tasks as needed.
