Florida State Trooper:
The Florida Highway Patrol is accepting applications for the position of State Trooper. The Florida Highway Patrol is a Nationally Accredited Law Enforcement Agency offering diverse working conditions in a culturally and ethnically expanding society. Troopers patrol areas that offer the very best of urban, suburban and rural lifestyles. The Sunshine State is home to over 16 million residents. Florida’s attractions, such as beautiful clean beaches, exciting theme parks and many fresh-air outdoor activities bring in over 71 million visitors annually.
Duties: The life of a State Trooper is challenging and rewarding. State Troopers are highly motivated hard-working law enforcement officers that specialize in traffic safety. 1,798 women and men patrol Florida’s 80,967 miles of Interstate, County and State roads. We work to make our highways safe using state–of-the-art training, equipment, technology and resources. We enforce the State’s criminal, traffic, motor vehicle and driver licensing laws and keep the motoring public safe. Officers assist motorists, perform motor vehicle inspections and investigate traffic crashes. Troopers detect and apprehend impaired drivers and search for missing and wanted persons. Investigators work driver license fraud, identity theft and odometer fraud cases. We serve as occupant protection specialists, drug recognition experts, and traffic homicide investigators. We also have felony officers and canine handlers who specialize in highway contraband interdiction. Plus, we offer many other exciting career and promotional opportunities.
Qualifications: Applicants must be: at least 19 years old; a U.S. citizen; have a valid driver’s license; a high school graduate; and willing to serve anywhere in Florida. Preference is given to applicants with 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of college course work from an accredited college or university or; U.S. military personnel with two years of service and an honorable discharge or; Florida certified sworn law enforcement officers with one year of experience.
Physical Requirements: Weight in proportion to height. Vision: correctable to 20/30, with normal color distinguishing capabilities and a 140-degree field of vision. Each applicant must pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT).
Required Evaluations: Applicants must pass written, polygraph, psychological, and physical examinations; a background investigation; a credit check and a drug screen.
Salary: Annual starting: $31,596.00 ($36,596.86 in Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, or Monroe counties. $37,932.84 in Lee and Collier counties.)
Benefits: Paid vacations, holidays, sick leave and military leave. Extensive Health and Life insurance options, excellent deferred compensation plans, non-contributory retirement plan, and excellent educational programs. All uniforms and an annual cleaning allowance ($500) are provided. All equipment, and weapons are provided. Each Trooper is issued a take-home patrol car.
Academy: Paid training ($2,256.98 monthly). All new Troopers complete a 26-week training academy. A ten-week transitional academy is offered for Florida certified law enforcement officers. The Florida Highway Patrol offers the finest law enforcement training in a para-military atmosphere. Physical fitness training, is provided daily, as are lodging, meals and study materials.
