Our client’s R&D area has an immediate need for a Principal Engineer, R&D (Integration) full-time position.
This position is responsible for developing new processes to integrate solar cells into space solar panels.
Projects will involve process improvement and process automation of interconnection and laydown methods on baseline rigid panels, as well as development of processes for solar cell integration with novel array designs including rollable/flexible configurations and customer-specific smallsat applications that are of current interest in the satellite industry.
Processes utilized include glassing and interconnection of solar cells, dispensing and patterning of silicone adhesives used for cell bonding and encapsulation, subcomponent placement, wiring (including flex wiring options), and use of electrical connectors.
Performing solar panel builds for specific internally and externally funded programs and missions will be needed.
Process development in an R&D environment may be followed by qualification and technology transfer into manufacturing.
This is a multi-faceted job that will require flexibility as well as an ability to learn about and develop new technology.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Development, implementation, and improvement of processes for performing solar cell integration, which may include interconnection by welding/soldering, glassing, pick-and-place methods, laydown, and bonding using a variety of silicones and adhesives onto both rigid and flexible solar panels.
Serve as engineering lead and point-of-contact in manufacture of solar panels for various development efforts, qualification and confidence testing, and customer builds.
Use of computer-aided-design (CAD) and modeling to design, evaluate and prototype subcomponents, tooling and equipment.
Specification, evaluation, procurement of appropriate equipment for process automation.
Evaluation of appropriate materials and designing experiments for integration with the goals of improving performance and manufacturability while maintaining quality and reliability.
Use results of above experiments to drive iterative cycles of process development and maturation.
Transitioning processes and products from a R&D environment to volume manufacturing, assisting with appropriate work instructions (WIs), configuring specifications and routes needed for manufacturing, and troubleshooting issues associated with manufacturing implementation. Work cross-functionally across organization to drive this transition process.
Interface with external customers to understand and define specific requirements for integration of photovoltaic power with their specific designs and applications, generate and implement engineering solutions to meet these requirements. Able to serve as main point of contact with customers.
Interact with a broad cross functional team of individuals from R&D, operations, and program management.

Proficient in use of MS PowerPoint, excel, project
Proficient in use of computer-aided-design (CAD), SolidWorks preferred
At least BS in an engineering discipline, MS or higher preferred
Mechanical/Aerospace/Materials Engineering degrees or similar training most applicable
5+ yr with BS, 3+ yr with MS preferred
