The Emergency Department Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is responsible for the provision of comprehensive clinical pharmacy services for the ED and all associated areas (eg. Pediatrics, Trauma, Family Express) including pharmacokinetic and therapeutic consultation.
Prepares, compounds, and dispenses prescriptions and medications for patients (Neonate, Pediatric, Adult, Geriatric) in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations for Pharmacy practice.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under supervision of the Supervising Pharmacist and Associate Director for Clinical Services:
-Provide Pharmacy review of medication orders prior to administration.
-Work collaboratively with other clinicians and health-care providers to implement and maintain innovative disease management programs and clinical pharmacy services.
-Participate in the development of medication use management programs within the Strong Health Systems including clinical guidelines, critical pathways, disease management, and drug use programs.
-Participates in providing didactic and experiential training in Clinical Pharmacy for baccalaureate (BS) and doctoral (PharmD) students and clinical pharmacy residents.
-Actively participates in clinical research projects resulting in presentations and/or publications.
-Participates as adjunct faculty in accredited schools of pharmacy in the clinical and didactic training of both baccalaureate (BS) and doctoral (PharmD) students.
-Participates in biomedical and/or pharmaceutical educational programs.
-Participate in the professional development and competency of clinical staff.
-Functions as a role model and as an educational resource for pharmacy staff.
-Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of residency programs in the areas of Pharmaceutical Care and Clinical Pharmacology.
-Keeps informed of all local, state, and federal laws covering the storage, handling, and dispensing of drugs and for interpreting each prescription order to determine that it meets all legal requirements.
-Keeps informed of the action, side effects, and proper usage of all new drugs as they are made commercially available as well as of all investigational drugs being studied at this institution.
-Maintains awareness of contemporary trends in the profession through the professional literature and regular attendance at professional organization meetings, institutes, and seminars.
-Participates collegially in the development of new programs, services and practices, in the education activities of the department, and the management and administration of the department.
-Provides patient-specific medication use teaching for discharge medications when appropriate.
-Focus on cost avoidance and cost savings due to medication use in the Emergency Department.
-Facilitate proper information transfer with regard to medication use for patients converted to Inpatient registry from ED.
-Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in New York State and meet the following criteria:
-Doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) or advanced training (residency, fellowship, and/or board certification).
-3 years of experience in area of specialty highly recommended.
The ideal candidate has worked within a large, fast-paced hospital and/or teaching hospital/medical center environment.
Hospital is a 750 bed academic medical center and a level 1 trauma center.
The Emergency Department sees over 90,000 patients per year.
