Academic Position in Clinical Microbiology & Microbial Molecular Diagnostics

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at the University of Minnesota Medical School seeks a fulltime ABP board certified/eligible clinical microbiologist. Academic rank, compensation and appointment type will be based on qualifications and experience. Candidates must have demonstrated ability in teaching and in scholarly productivity. Minimum requirements are an MD, PhD or equivalent degree. Clinical pathology residency training or clinical microbiology post-doctoral training is required. Applicants should be board certified or eligible by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology (preferably with sub-specialty qualification in Medical Microbiology) or by the American Board of Medical Microbiology. Physician applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in Minnesota.



The Clinical Microbiology and Virology Sections provide all diagnostic testing for the MHealth Fairview system (several hospitals and clinics). The Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (IDDL) menu embraces all areas of conventional microbiology, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, many qualitative bacterial and viral PCR and array assays, as well as quantitative viral load assays. Serologic infectious diseases assays are also supervised by the IDDL Medical Directors. The Laboratory technical work is staffed by two supervisors, three technical specialists, nine senior technologists (Tech Leads), and 48 Clinical Laboratory Scientists (Medical Technologists), including four Medical Laboratory Technicians.


Candidates will also participate in medical student, resident and fellow education, and are encouraged to pursue a research program that leads to a national/international reputation of excellence. Clinical responsibilities, on-call duties and conferences are shared with other members of the microbiology faculty.


Academic time will be used to pursue scholarly work in the candidates area of specialty/research expertise. Preferred candidates will be active in their national organizations and foster an academic environment for medical students, residents, fellows and faculty.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is home to a large number of anatomic and clinical pathology faculty as well as many basic science faculty involved in research, undergraduate and graduate education. The department also has an ACGME approved residency program and eight ACGME approved fellowships.
