(They have had record sales the last 4 years.) Their Sister company also does $60 Million in sales. Their parent company is a $5 Billion Dollar organization. They have been producing an extensive and innovative range of prepreg and adhesive products for over 25 years. These products have continuously met the demanding requirements of aerospace, medical, industrial and sporting goods customers and their applications. They formulate and manufacture high quality composite materials and Adhesives and resins for the Aerospace, Industrial and Sports markets. We are looking for a Research & Development Chemist to work at their Irvine, CA location. Position Overview Develops epoxy-resin prepregs and adhesive formulations. Assists with product scale-up, optimizing processing and performance. Conducts mechanical/physical testing of Adhesive Systems and Composite Materials. Contributes as a team member in developing strategies for the evolution and launch of new products. Reports to: Senior Chemist --- (Retiring in a year or so- a strong prospect could lead to this role.) Key duties and responsibilities include the following: § Formulates and develops new epoxy systems including carbon fiber, aramid, and fiberglass prepreg products for various composite applications across all composite markets. § Evaluates properties of resins as well as cured composites utilizing industry established methods (SACMA, ASTM, etc) as well as custom test protocols. § Uses an “hands on” approach in assisting with manufacturing scale-up and design for manufacturability initiatives. § Assists with the processing of new as well as existing products to evolve best practices for improved quality, robustness, and yield. § Uses statistical techniques such as DOE and mixture designs to help determine robust formulations and processing of materials. Works closely with the engineering group. § Interacts with applications/sales engineers to determine customer design criteria, product performance requirements, etc. § Occasionally mentors/directs the activities of R&D lab tech personnel. This includes those engaged in analytical, mechanical, and sample formulation screening and prototyping efforts. § Interprets results of experiments and reports results to the R&D Manager and others in the product development group. § Engages in direct communication with vendors, sales reps, and customers for specific and strategic product development project applications. Provides input on project feasibility and timing. § Provides analytical equipment support in development activities and general plant technical, engineering, or production support. § Uses project-planning in project work. Assists in compilation of product data sheets, process guidelines, and material safety data sheets. Works in compliance with ISO 9001 quality management system. § Occasional travel (up to 10% including overnight). Qualifications/Skills/Credentials § A Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or Materials Science. § 3- 10 years formulating experience in epoxy composites or related adhesive products is required. § Knowledge of composite prepreg processing/lamination/formulating is highly desired. Good understanding of how to apply industry standards, testing, methodology, and programs. § Understanding of polymer rheology, cure kinetics, and processing. Familiarity with prepreg machinery and processing. Understanding of composite design. § Possesses good technical knowledge, logical reasoning ability, excellent written and verbal communication skills, good interpersonal skills and good organizational skills. § Must be computer literate and familiar with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Experience with MS Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint is needed. Behavioral Traits Desired § Articulate, good oral, written communications § Detail oriented/Analytical § Self-starter/Takes initiative, ‘hands on’ approach § Team player § Good organizational skills SALARY: 1) Experienced candidate (7-10 years+) with proven product/industry experience developing epoxy resin systems; carbon fiber composites experience a big plus- pay could go as high as $90K 2) Less experienced candidate with 3-5 years of R&D experience formulating similar or related materials with a MS Chemistry degree- pay up to $70K + Bonus: (No formal plan- last year it paid 10% for Mgt. and between 3-5% for everyone else.
