The Process Engineering Manager is a member of the R&D Group based in New Hampton, NY. The position reports to the Director of Particle Engineering R&D. The Process Engineering Manager will develop a team of process development engineers that participate in and lead a wide variety of technical projects, mainly focused on process development, equipment design, installation, and qualification that include Balchems microencapsulation, agglomeration, spray-drying, extrusion technologies as well as developing new processing technologies. The Process Engineering Manager will be the liaison between R&D, Manufacturing & Supply Chain, and Corporate Engineering leading downstream R&D projects from late-stage development through commercialization. The Process Engineering Manager will build a high performing team that focuses on Balchem current process technologies and leads the effort in designing robust manufacturing processes in the launch of new products.


  • Build, develop, and lead a process development team to do the following:

  • Identify and introduce new process technologies, in a timely fashion, to the Pilot Plant and Manufacturing sites, and formulation chemists to improve upon existing or facilitate new manufacturing processes, and formulation development processes

  • Develop efficient and reproducible manufacturing processes for all products emanating from R&D

  • Develop viable, reproducible, efficient plant scale product manufacturing processes, through Pilot Plant scale-up activities, based upon an in-depth knowledge of the manufacturing plants processing capabilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and schedule product scale-up activities at manufacturing sites globally and at external manufacturers, as needed

  • Provide guidance on troubleshooting, in a timely and accurate manner, any bulk-related issues (quality or scale-up related) at internal and external manufactures; Drive root cause analysis (RCA) with appropriate teams

  • Responsible for preparing capital expenditure requests & purchase orders for acquisition of process related equipment; Monitors expenditure of approved funds for process related projects

  • Lead a cross-functional team, including R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, and Manufacturing resources in managing and executing projects in support of Balchems AIM project portfolio

  • Assigned to be Technical lead on multiple AIM projects and Support projects

  • Author Technology Transfer reports prior to releasing products to manufacture plants

  • May be required to assist manufacturing plant to continuously improve on efficiency and KPIs, as needed

  • Ensure implementation and rigor of product development processes and design control procedures

Leadership Requirements:

  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Science, Mechanical Engineering or related technical field; Master of Science preferred

  • 15 years related technical project management experience required; Leadership role preferred

  • Excellent communication, influencing, and problem-solving skills

  • Highly self-motivated leader able to motivate and retain a team of individuals that are responsible for multiple tasks and projects efficiently within the context of a fast-paced, busy environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, coaching, communicating transparently, and managing conflict

  • Successful track record of commercializing new products with new process technologies

  • Experience in new product development planning multiple work-streams, identifying risk and implementing action plans to optimize time lines and reduce execution risk

  • Experience establishing customer requirements from defined needs, specifications and translating to product requirements

  • Experience utilizing combination of analytical, statistical, computational, and empirical methods to gain a deep understanding of design and minimize overall development timelines

  • Experience managing ambiguity

  • Demonstrated learning agility of new subject matter

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and influencing skills

  • Knowledge of cGMPs, Food Safety, and HACCP preferred
