Job Overview: ATMI is seeking an energetic Scientist/Engineer to research, develop and characterize new adsorbents for exciting applications in semiconductor device fabrication and emerging energy markets. The position is located in Danbury, Connecticut and reports to the Director of Research and Development. Primary Responsibilities: · Research, develop and synthesize new and improved porous materials, notably but not limited to activated carbons, for gas storage applications; · Characterize such porous materials using techniques such as gas adsorption porosimetry (both volumetric and gravimetric procedures), x-ray diffraction, thermal conductivity and permeability; · Assist in the development of a prototype solar-powered adsorption refrigeration generator using such materials with scale-up to beta version and eventually full commercialization; · Coordinate development activities with corporate, government and academic partners; · Present summarized results on a regular monthly basis and periodically at internal meetings, external conferences, in technical publications and to customers; · Investigate alternative applications for ATMI’s nanoporous materials; · Safe handling of hazardous materials; · Maintain a safe working environment; · Generate innovation around improved adsorbents and coordinate project intellectual property activities; · Work and communicate effectively within a team environment that may comprise members from R&D, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, legal, and finance functional organizations. Education/Experience: · Master’s degree (M.S.) in chemistry or chemical engineering with 5+ years experience or a Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering with some research experience preferred in the fields of physical chemistry, gas adsorption, surface science, or materials science; · At least 3 years experience in gas adsorption and related characterization techniques, with industrial experience strongly preferred; · Ability to be results oriented and meet deadlines and milestones; · Knowledge of safety protocol in the work environment; · Prior experience scaling-up development materials to beta versions would be advantageous; · Familiarity with statistical data analysis; · Strong documentation skills, evidenced by an ability to keep a good lab notebook; · Excellent verbal and written communication skills; · Ability to travel internationally and domestically up to 20%.
