PIPING MATERIALS ENGINEER
Professional experience of 7 years in the oil & gas and petrochemical
domains, as a Piping Materials Engineer. I have acquired proficiency in the
various facets of piping materials engineering, by having worked in a range
of significantly large scale Detail Engineering (EPC) projects.
Technical competence:
. Piping design codes & standards: Adept at industry piping design codes &
standards such as ASME, ASTM, API, BS, MSS-SP, NACE and PIP, applicable
to process plant piping.
. Piping Material Specifications: Create / determine piping class
specifications according to ASME B31.3, relevant ASME dimensional and
pressure-integrity standards, with respect to given fluid classification
and base material requirements.
. Valves & Valve Material Specifications: Comprehensive knowledge of gate,
globe, check, ball, butterfly & other special valves- Preparing valve
specifications/ datasheets; reviewing valve GA drawings from vendors.
. Calculations:
. Pipe wall thickness calculations: Thorough experience in performing &
checking calculations for pipe wall thickness, using both computer-
aided and manual design techniques.
. Vacuum thickness calculations: Corroborate wall thickness for pipes
under external pressure, for the full/partial vacuum conditions.
. Underground pipe thickness calculations: Perform calculations for
underground lines.
. Branch reinforcement calculations: Verify branch reinforcement
requirements based on ASME B31.3 calculations & subsequently formulate
branch tables.
. Specialty Items: Thorough knowledge of piping special items like
strainers, steam traps, sample coolers, flame arrestors, safely shower/
eye washes, sight glasses, hoses & hose connectors,
. Metallic/ Non-metallic Piping: In addition to the customary metallic
piping (CS, SS, AS), have experience with non-metallic piping systems
such as RTR (GRE, GRP).
. Line Lists data: Prepare Line List, complete with all Engineering Data
like radiography, LP/MP tests, PWHT etc. Calculation of hydrostatic test
pressure for each line based on ASME B31.3 & the line design conditions
from Process.
. Material Take Off/ Bill of materials: - Confident in leading and
undertaking piping bulk & in-line accessory MTO's. Appreciate the
importance of various stages of MTO and accuracy needed to support
project cost estimates. Application of contingency percentage (bump),
based on the stage & quality of the MTO, to determine the quantity of
material to be requisitioned.
. 3D support (PDS inputs): Specialist knowledge in materials database
management and material control with 3D CAD systems like PDS.
. Material/ Purchase Requisitions: Prepare Technical purchase specification
to support RFQ's and PO's for piping Bulk materials & specialty items.
Capable of generation and issue of requisitions, and management and
control of its changes including quantities.
. Technical Bid evaluations: Experience in technical bid evaluation of
piping vendor quotations. Capable of giving technical recommendation of
suppliers for the bulk piping materials, valves and special piping items.
. Vendor Drawing Review: Reviews Vendor Drawings for bulk items like valves
and various specialty items like strainers, steam traps, sample coolers,
safety showers etc.
. Piping Insulation & painting: Experience in the development of Painting,
Insulation and Coating & Wrapping specifications.
. Experience in producing Piping Standard Details for the Piping Layout
group. Core competency in process/utility P&ID's and plant layouts.
. Adequate exposure to adopt a practical approach to piping material
problems with familiarity of the requirements/interactions with other
engineering disciplines and site.
. Fine exposure in holding techno-commercial meetings with national &
international vendors of repute.
