I. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direction and supervision of the Operative Services Director is directly responsible for performing circulating and/or scrub nurse duties in the Operating Room; for providing nursing care to patients preoperatively, perioperatively, and postoperatively in support of care directed by the surgeon; for providing other assistance as required to the surgical team; and for acting in any nursing capacity as directed by the Operating Room Director and Coordinator. I. TASKS PERFORMED A. Performs all circulating duties timely and efficiently B. Supervises and directs patient care in a single O.R. unit C. Assists in supervision of personnel & dept. - safe environment D. Assists in control & maintenance of drugs, supplies, & equipment E. Assists in administrative duties as directed by Director and/or Coordinator JOB REQUIREMENTS POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of South Dakota. PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of one year experience in operating room nursing is preferred. Participates in educational conferences, and updates and maintains current professional clinical competency related to areas of responsibilities. Attends all mandatory hospital and departmental meetings and in-services. BLS required. POSITION ACCOUNTABLE FOR: All nursing care behaviors described in the Operating Room Registered Nurse Job Description. Maintains clinical competency in specific area of employment. Maintains a level of physical and mental health required to meet the needs of the position. Patient care staff must be knowledgeable in caring for patients in the following age groups:[ ] Neonate (Birth to 1 mo.) [ ] Sr. Adult (55-64 yrs)[ ] Infant/Child (1 mo to 12 yrs) [ ] Geriatric (65 & above)[ ] Adolescent (13-17 yrs) [ X] All age groups (Birth and above)[ ] Adult (18-54 yrs) POSITION ACCOUNTABLE TO: The Patient and Family, Co-workers, Director of Operative Services. POSITION SUMMARY: Performs the primary functions of an Operating Room R.N. Meets the established standards of nursing practice. Adheres to nursing code of ethics and St. Mary's Healthcare Mission Statements. FUNCTION I I. PERFORMS ALL CIRCULATING DUTIES TIMELY AND EFFIEIENTLYA. Supervises and assists scrub nurse as necessary.B. Has all supplies and equipment in room.C. Helps damp dust room in a.m. before supplies are opened.D. Assists in opening all sterile packs and supplies according to aseptic technique and assists in preparation as necessary.E. Assists surgeons, anesthetists and other personnel as needed to assure good patient care.F. Observes procedure, providing supplies and equipment as needed and observes patient for changes in condition.G. Prepares operative area as directed by standards (both shave prep and skin prep according to established policy and procedure).H. Assists anesthesia in positioning patient.I. Positions all items and equipment as needed and moves when necessary throughout procedure.J. Assists anesthesia on induction and extubation of patient.K. Performs pre and postop sponge, sharp, and instrument count with scrub nurse according to established policy and procedure. Reports to surgeon.L. Cares for specimens and cultures as directed by set policies and procedures.M. Maintains records of procedure and records and reports any unusual occurrences.N. Provides orderly progression of schedule by informing coordinator as to completeness of surgical procedure.O. Assists anesthetist with patient to Recovery Room.P. Is responsible for taking their share of on-call, assists with emergency procedures, and may call more help if absolutely necessary.FUNCTION II I. SUPERVISES AND DIRECTS PATIENT CARE IN A SINGLE O.R. UNITA. Assures that proper aseptic technique and practices are used according to established standards of practice.B. Supervises other personnel in the room and directs or assists as necessary. C. Is prompt and swift in transporting of patient to O.R., and ensures care of patient through proper identification, checking of chart and reporting of changes in condition.D. Prepares supplies and organizes material with respect to special needs of patient, procedure and surgeon.E. Assists with psychological needs of patient.F. Documents individual patient inter-operative care plans.G. Assists with developing monitors or screens for quality assurance according to departmental standards. FUNCTION III I. ASSISTS IN SUPERVISION OF PERSONNEL AND DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE OPTIMUM ASSURANCE OF SAFE ENVIRONMENTA. Checks rooms, material, and equipment for proper care and handling.B. Assures clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and electrical hazards and aseptic techniques.C. Works with Director of Operative Services to assist in maintenance of high quality of material and all supplies.D. Assists in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis.E. Assists in cleaning rooms, furniture, equipment and floors according to established policy and procedure whenever necessary.F. Assists in maintenance of instruments and supplies by proper cleaning care, utilization and sterilization according to established policy.G. Understands and applies policy and procedure of "Flash" sterilization of appropriate equipment. FUNCTION IV I. ASSISTS IN CONTROL AND MAINTENANCE OF DRUGS, SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENTA. Assists in care, handling, maintenance, storage and ordering of supplies, drugs & equipment.B. Maintains adequate supplies in each Operating Room to ensure availability during procedures.C. Assists in inventory of supplies.D. Distributes supplies to rooms and suite as directed according to use, number, and item. FUNCTION V I. ASSISTS IN ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES AS DIRECTED BY OR CORRDINATOR AND/OR DIRECTORII. A. Helps with maintenance of records.B. Assists in establishment and maintenance of procedures, policies and standards.C. Assists in scheduling procedures and assignment of operative schedules and personnel.D. Acts as charge nurse in the absence of the director.E. Attends all department ward conferences and assists in preparation and instigation of learning experiences.F. Attends and assists in staff development and revision of policy and procedure.G. Is knowledgeable in department responsibility of internal and external disaster and fire safety.H. Adheres to customer service excellence standards.
