Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III for the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine within the New Jersey Medical School. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Teaching Specialist III will order, breed and maintain animal colonies including rabbits, rats, and mice models for the study of cardiovascular disease and aging; order large animals; responsible for large animal handling, pre- and post-op care for rabbits, woodchucks, and pigs; responsible for monitoring anesthesia status during large animal surgery; maintains the IACUC data base; assists Principal Investigators in renewal IACUC protocol; performs various research relating to animal physiology studies. Among the key duties of this position are the following: - Maintains research mouse colonies involved in cardiovascular projects, including breeding, ear notching, tail clipping, DNA extraction, PCR / genotyping, training mice on the treadmill, feeding and weighing mice on special diets.
- Maintains colony data, orders mice, and provides regular updates on colony status to faculty members and trainees involved in animal projects.
- Maintains rat colonies, orders rats, treats rats in connection with ongoing projects.
- Maintains rabbit colonies including breeding, feeding and weighing mice on special diets.
- Orders large animals, orders supplies for large animals and all small animal surgeons, maintains the large animal database, assists with sacrifice (heart perfusion), and maintains records.
- Schedules large animal surgeries and experiments.

Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Must be willing to work with animals, including rodents, rabbits, woodchucks, and pigs.
- Excellent knowledge and demonstrated expertise in use of document processing and data management software.
- Must have excellent writing skills and document production skills.
- Must be able to analyze research data using Students t-test (Excel) and ANOVA (Graphpad Prism).
- Must be comfortable working in a multicultural, multilingual environment.
- Must be able to understand research hypotheses, scientific models, and proposed research methods sufficiently well to discuss with scientific staff and propose improvements.
- Must be continuously accessible by email and must be able to work during evenings, weekends, and holidays to review drafts of research documents, respond to questions from trainees, and oversee ongoing grant, animal protocol and manuscript development.
- Must be available to work additional hours on short notice when necessary to meet key deadlines.
- Must possess good organization and documentation skills and must demonstrate good communication skills in English.
- Must be comfortable working quickly and accurately in a stressful environment with multiple deadlines and varying priorities.
- Must be available to work flexible hours on short notice, including overtime and some weekends and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment - Some stooping, reaching, climbing and bending.
- Occasional lifting of 20 pounds to a height of 6 feet.
