We have partnered with a government services firm in the Fort Detrick, MD area to provide them with a Lead Vet Behavioral Tech.

Responsibilities of the Lead Vet Behavioral Tech:

Passes on to other workers instructions received from the project manager, supervisor, or TOCOR (or other delegated representative). Demonstrate proper work methods and starts work.

Insure that needed equipment and supplies are available, and that needed stock is obtained from various supply locations.

Perform Tasks along with other employees and set pace performing non-supervisory work of the same kind and level as that done by the group led.

Operate medical and research equipment to protect laboratory personnel and other animals from infection by organisms and handling animals by appropriate procedures to protect coworkers from bites and scratches.

Inform designated TPOC of any equipment malfunctions or expired certification.

Check work in progress and when finished for compliance with project manager instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines, and urge or advise other employees to follow project manager or supervisor instructions and to meet deadlines.

Assists in reviewing SOPs for all functions and activities as performed by Laulima personnel. This shall include, but is not limited to, assisting in preparation for AAALACi site visits, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) inspections, Medical Research and Materiel Command (MRMC) Animal Care and Use Regulatory Office (ACURO) staff assistance visits, and inspections by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Department of the Army Inspector General (DAIG) or similar entities.

Perform standard veterinary procedures without assistance or supervision, to include, but not limited to,: surgical site preparation; administration of medications or other substances by injection, orally, or topically; placing intravenous catheters; incubating; anesthetizing animals using injectable or gas anesthetics; anesthetic monitoring and euthanasia; providing assistance in radiographic and surgical procedures; collection of blood and other biosamples; creating entries in medical records (to include Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)-compliant entries), conduct of health checks and physical exams, and performance of handling and restraint of animals.

Shall review schedules, and other technical documents and plans, based on scientific data and veterinarian direction; provide daily oversight with coordination from TPOCs and/or NCOIC of sections.

Provide information to project manager, supervisor, or TOCOR (or designated representative) on status and progress of work causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems (e.g., additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees).

Apply practical knowledge and expertise with animal health care technical skills in resolving technical problems real-time in non-containment.

Independently plan the work and provides the needed personnel and supplies utilizing animal protocol and other guidance information as available

Provide scheduling of other contract employees to ensure that mission requirements are met. Provide notice to the TOCOR, TPOC, or the Animal Health Care Technicians' Supervisor, in writing, when any supply item needs to be reordered.

Coordinate weekly food enrichment requests from multiple sections to provide to the Commissary to meet Commissary's suspense to order the items.

Pair macaques, and when possible other nonhuman primate species, in a research setting.

Conduct behavior assessments, to include but is not limited to, assessing nonhuman primate pair stability, detailed nonhuman primate assessments, and rabbit assessments as requested. Review and modify SOPs and practices to ensure state of the art social and non-social enrichment is provided to all species at USAMRIID.

Perform Behavior and Enrichment in execution of NHP environmental enrichment programs that comply with the Animal Welfare Regulations (9 CFR, as amended) and The Guide (NRC, 2010, and as revised), as well as other applicable regulations and for other species at USAMRIID.

Work independently in handling and performing all basic procedures for Old World NHPs, Rabbits, and Rodents and perform all basic tasks competently and without supervision. Responsible for various logistical tasks including receipt, storage and maintenance of inventories, an accounting for all logistical supplies, reporting discrepancies of receipt immediately to the TOCOR, TPOC, or Director, VMD (or designated representative).

Sign, date and process forward all receiving documents, invoices, and/or packing slips to the designated purchasing agent and maintain copies.

Immediately notify the division representative of any treatment or diagnostic failures so follow-up actions can be initiated.

Provide training to personnel as requested by TPOC, TOCOR or the Director, VMD or his or her representative relative to animal behavior management or health care/technical care.

Requirements of the Lead Vet Behavioral Tech:

HS Diploma
LAT certification or higher level of certification, as defined by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), is required prior to or within six (6) months starting work on this Task Order.
Minimum three (3) years in a research setting, of technical experience with nonhuman primate social housing (Macaques preferred), proficient in pairing Macaques in a research setting, assessing pair stability, and performing detailed nonhuman primate behavior assessments.
MUST have experience with the medical side of care such as administering meds, performing medical procedures etc.
