inquirED was founded by teachers with the mission of bringing inquiry-based learning to every student. Inquiry Journeys, inquirEDs elementary social studies curriculum, is used in schools and districts in 30+ states to help students develop deep social studies content knowledge and build the skills essential for a thriving democracy. Were looking for a Text Production Coordinator to help us define best practices across a variety of educational materials (articles, infographics, interactive resources, etc.) while managing the development of those materials between lesson designers, writers, editors, and visual artists.

In this role, you will exercise both your deep knowledge of best practices in K-5 literacy as well as an aptitude for project management and iterative problem-solving. Our inquiry-based curriculum is designed to provide students with literacy-rich learning experiences. Students investigate a range of educational texts (articles, infographics, etc.), which begin as seedling ideas in our curriculum design process. Your role will be to take these initial ideas and flesh them out into fully formed educational material assets. This will require you to call upon a variety of contributors to help draft, review, and shape those materials to prepare them for publication. Regular responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing educational texts that align to both curriculum learning targets and best practices in developmental literacy instruction
  • Evaluating text complexity according to qualitative and quantitative metrics and overseeing revisions that support appropriate leveling
  • Helping to develop our organizations criteria for selecting and developing texts, considering factors such as readability, content relevance, text complexity, and rigor of instructional task
  • Coordinating with subject matter experts and fact-checkers to ensure accuracy
  • Collaborating with visual artists and editors across divisions within the team to seek feedback and consultation as needed on a project-by-project basis
  • Editing and proofreading materials at multiple stages for clarity, consistency, syntax, and overall coherence
  • Ensuring that all publications are age-appropriate, meet educational standards, and adhere to style guide requirements
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of trends and developments in K-5 educational writing
  • Organizing workflows for multiple contributors across projects that are on different timelines

The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for elementary literacy and an understanding of how to design inquiry-based, high quality instructional materials. Youll have in-depth knowledge of the current literacy research base as well as a practical understanding of what teachers need in the classroom. Youll have the aptitude for building something that doesnt exist, thrive in ambiguity, and be highly iterative in your work.

Requirements

  • Deep experience with elementary students from a literacy perspective
  • Experience in project management
  • Strong managerial skills and ability to provide and process both quantitative and qualitative data and feedback to drive product iteration
  • Strong understanding of and proven success with rapid iterative design processes
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Expertise in both line editing and content/conceptual editing
  • Deep understanding of qualitative and quantitative metrics for evaluating and editing text complexity
  • Extreme attention to detail, including skill in evaluating clarity, consistency, and alignment
  • Meticulous organizational ability in order to set priorities, organize workload, juggle multiple responsibilities, and meet ambitious deadlines
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, feedback-driven environment in circumstances involving ambiguity and nuance
  • Knowledge of second-language acquisition in the curriculum content areas preferred
  • A willingness to be scrappy, creative, and unconventional
  • A commitment to inquirEDs mission and model of inquiry
