Title: Senior Associate Scientist I
Location: 100 Hood Park Drive, Boston, MA 02129
Duties: Responsible for laboratory experiments from multiple workstreams related to clinical and pre-clinical research. Run various assays from blood and bone marrow from clinical trials for SCD, Thalassemia, and ALD. Collaborate with various stakeholders from other research and clinical teams and run assays for non-clinical and research in vivo experiments (mouse and NHP). Perform complex technical work related to gene therapy non-clinical and clinical trials and research experiments, including isolation of MNCs from peripheral blood, CD34+ cells from bone marrow and apheresis products, flow cytometry, HPLC, ELISA, DNA extraction, and qPCR. Learn and perform bluebird bio specific assays (%LVV, sc Western, ex vivo sickling). Contribute to experimental design, development, and qualification / validation of bluebird’s pipeline of gene therapies. Train on new assays as needed and train other lab members as needed. Participate in writing and updating protocols and reports. Maintain accurate and reliable record keeping including database management, electronic notebooks, and all other pertinent documentation. Compile, analyze, and present data to functional teams. Remain compliant with all trainings. Position reports to Cambridge, MA office; however, telecommuting from a home office may be allowed.
Requirements: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Cell Biology, Medical Science, Molecular Biology, or a directly related field plus four (4) years of experience in a laboratory environment. Experience may be gained concurrently and must include:
Two (2) years in each of the following:
- Working with lentiviral vector treated human biological samples
- Taking ownership of laboratory projects and presenting results
- Working in a team environment including meeting deadlines, and prioritizing and balancing work from multiple individuals
- Sample management/inventory
- Training others in a laboratory environment
- Documenting experiments through an electronic laboratory notebook
- Working knowledge of computer software, hardware, and standard office systems sufficient to record and analyze scientific data and prepare reports (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Prism, or similar)
One (1) year in each of the following:
- Flow cytometry
- qPCR
- Single colony VCN and colony plucking from colony forming units from human peripheral blood and bone marrow
- Isolation of human mononuclear cells from bone marrow and peripheral blood
- CD34+ selection from human bone marrow
- Writing and updating laboratory protocols
Will accept a Master’s degree and two (2) years of described experience.
