Position SummaryThe Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) is the operational and clinical leader responsible for overseeing all facets of pharmacy operations, with a critical focus on both sterile and non-sterile compounding(link removed) The PIC ensures absolute compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, and mandated quality standards, specifically USP <795>, <797>, and <800>(link removed) This leadership role demands expert-level clinical knowledge, strong management skills, and a commitment to patient safety and quality assurance across all medication dispensing and compounding activities.
🔑 Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities1. Leadership, Management, and Staff DevelopmentSupervision: Provide direct leadership and supervision for all pharmacy personnel, including licensed pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians. Training & Performance: Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive training programs, conduct performance reviews, and manage scheduling to ensure optimal staffing and workflow efficiency. Culture: Foster a collaborative, professional, and patient-focused work environment that prioritizes adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards.
2. Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance (QA)Compliance Oversight: Guarantee strict adherence to all governing laws and regulations, including those from the State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, and The Joint Commission (or similar accreditation bodies). USP Standards: Serve as the final authority on compliance with USP General Chapters <795> (Non-sterile Compounding), <797> (Sterile Compounding), and <800> (Handling Hazardous Drugs)(link removed)> QA Program: Design, implement, and administer a robust, proactive Quality Assurance program that includes gap analyses, vulnerability assessments, and continuous improvement projects (e.g., Lean principles) across all operations.
3. Compounding and Operations OversightSOP Management: Develop, maintain, and enforce comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all sterile and non-sterile compounding processes. Sterile Environment: Directly manage and oversee the cleanroom suite and controlled environments for sterile compounding, ensuring proper environmental monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance protocols are followed. Accuracy: Supervise the accurate preparation, labeling, and dispensing of all compounded medications, both sterile and non-sterile.
4. Medication Safety and Inventory ControlMedication Safety: Champion medication safety initiatives, oversee dispensing processes to minimize errors, and ensure the proper handling, storage, and security of all medications, including controlled substances and hazardous drugs. Inventory & Fiscal Control: Manage the pharmacy's formulary, purchasing, and inventory systems; implement cost-control measures through conservative supply use and effective stock rotation to minimize waste.
5. Clinical and Interprofessional CollaborationClinical Consultation: Provide expert clinical consultations to patients and healthcare providers regarding drug information, compounded formulations, complex therapies, and potential drug interactions. Care Coordination: Collaborate actively with prescribers, nurses, and other healthcare team members to optimize patient care plans and resolve medication-related issues.
Required QualificationsEducation and LicensureDoctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy is mandatory(link removed)> Possession of a current, active, and unrestricted state pharmacist license is mandatory(link removed)>
ExperienceMinimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience as a practicing pharmacist. Proven, hands-on experience in both sterile and non-sterile compounding, often requiring a specific number of years in a hospital, home infusion, or specialized compounding pharmacy setting. Superior verbal and written communication skills for staff training, provider consultation, and regulatory correspondence.
