The role of a Service Reliability Engineer (SRE) Project Manager is a hybrid position that combines the technical expertise of ensuring system uptime and performance with the leadership skills of managing projects. This individual is responsible for driving initiatives that enhance the stability, scalability, and resilience of services and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
A professional in this combined role typically balances technical oversight with project and people management.
Reliability & Operations: Leads efforts to maintain and improve the reliability and availability of systems and services, often by treating operations as a software problem. This includes defining and measuring Service Level Objectives (SLOs), enhancing observability (monitoring and alerting), and leading incident response and post-mortem processes.
Project Management: Plans, executes, and manages site-level capital and maintenance projects, ensuring they meet scope, schedule, and budget targets. This involves coordinating cross-functional teams (operations, development, vendors), developing documentation, and leading project review meetings.
Automation & Tooling: Drives the development of tools and automation to reduce manual tasks ("toil") and improve operational efficiency and consistency (e.g., automated runbooks, CI/CD pipeline optimization).
Risk Management & Analysis: Conducts root cause analysis (RCA) of failures, performs system studies (e.g., arc flash, load flow in industrial settings), and develops engineering solutions to prevent repetitive problems and mitigate risks to business operations.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Expertise: A strong background in software engineering or systems engineering, with proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), infrastructure as code tools (Terraform, Kubernetes), and monitoring systems (Prometheus, Grafana).
Project Management Skills: Experience in managing engineering projects from conception to execution, with strong organizational skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously. PMP certification or formal training is often preferred.
Leadership & Communication: Strong leadership skills to mentor teams and foster collaboration across different departments. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential for synthesizing demands and driving alignment between technical and business goals.
Education: Typically requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical).
