Our Accounting Division provides accounting services for all Metro departments and venues including the Oregon Zoo, the Oregon Convention Center, the Portland'5 Centers for the Arts, Metro recycling and hazardous waste facilities, parks and nature, and more.

The AP/AR Technician performs a variety of skilled accounting tasks according to established accounting principles and procedures. This will include reviewing and processing invoices, reviewing purchase card transactions for compliance, and maintaining accounts and prepare financial reports for accounts receivable and accounts payable. You will also provide customer service as it relates to payment status, account status, and licensing information.

This position is designated as a routine telework/hybrid in-person. With at least one day a week in the office. Currently, all employees must reside in Oregon or Washington; Metro cannot support telework from other states.

As the AP/AR Technician you will:
  • Assumes responsibility for a complex, Metro-wide accounting function; prepare, maintain and verify all routed financial records or reports.
  • Maintain accounts by coding, processing, and posting payables and receivables.
  • Prepare revenue and expenditure reports, and balance/reconcile reports against actual income and expense input.
  • Review financial records for accuracy; post and reconcile journals, ledgers, logs or other records on a daily or periodic basis.
  • Assign and process accounts payable based on documentation, invoices, contracts and statements.
  • Prepare invoices in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Perform cashiering function by receiving, posting, balancing and depositing cash received.
  • Allocate revenue to general ledger accounts, using spreadsheet techniques and journal entry development.
  • Calculate, edit, post and verify data to produce regular or special summaries; balances reports or other records.
  • Accumulate and classify data from varied sources to make summary reports as required:
  • Verify completed summaries against source documents which may involve statistical tabulations and calculations in accordance with established formulas, equations and technical data.
  • Establish, maintain and revise filing system.
  • Determine appropriate file category, logs and files all records.
  • Respond to a variety of departmental, vendor, and public requests for information relative to assigned function; provide requested information when authorized or refer to appropriate individual for response.
  • Assist in developing procedures and reporting formats to establish or improve specific accounting processes.

  • Ability to accurately apply fundamental accounting principles to the keeping of detailed account records and the preparation of financial reports utilizing spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines and demands of peak season workloads.
  • Ability to make arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.

Minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D, or the equivalent of two years of college or vocational courses in accounting and business; AND
  • Two years of accounting experience applicable to the assigned area; OR
  • We will consider any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION

Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metros internal equity review process, and the candidates qualifications, the appointment will typically be made between Step 1 $25.61 to the equity range Step 4 $229.65. The full-salary range for this position is Step 1 $23.80 to Step 7 $34.36 an hour.

This position is eligible and is represented by AFSCME 3580. It is classified as a Accounting Technician II (Download PDF reader) Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions.
