Who We Are

The Greater Valley YMCA (GVYMCA or GVY) is a volunteer-led, nonprofit, community organization. The Y is committed to strengthening community by positively changing lives every day. At each of our branches, we concentrate our efforts in three areas: Healthy Living, Youth Development, and Social Responsibility. And we do so in a way that upholds the Ys traditional family values of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Honesty.

For over 100 years, the Y has made tangible differences in the communities of Allentown, Bethlehem, Catasauqua, Easton, Forks, Nazareth, those comprising the Slate Belt region and the Lehigh Valley as a whole. Founded as individual YMCAs as early as 1897, the following branches of the Greater Valley Y merged together between 2010 and 2015: the Nazareth YMCA, the Suburban North Family YMCA, the Family YMCA of Easton, Phillipsburg & Vicinity and the Bethlehem YMCA. In 2014, the Forks YMCA Education Center was established. The Slate Belt branch was opened in 2015. In January 2017, the Allentown YMCA joined the Greater Valley YMCA.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for Attendants for our Warming Station and will assist in oversight of the operation of our warming station, a wintry weather emergency shelter for our homeless neighbors.

A Day in the Life as an Attendant

As an Attendant for the Warming Station, you will help the GVYMCA achieve its goals to ensure our Warming Station is problem-free and safe so that employees can work, and guests can use our facilities under the best conditions. You will be responsible for maintaining the safety of all in the program while ensuring all procedures and policies are being met.

Responsibilities as an Attendant

Provides building security walk through at start and/or end of shift.
Provides supervision to participants utilizing the warming station during operational hours.
Assists with intake/outtake of guests.
Assists in the delivery of all meals provided through the YMCA food program, snacks, dinner, coffee.
Assists in the supervision of guest showers.
Responsible for upkeep of daily laundering of towels, sheets, blankets, and necessary program supplies.
Assists in the restocking of supplies for daily program needs: laundry, food, beverage.
Administers nightly smoking breaks.
Ensures program compliance with all policies and procedures.
Ensures safety and security of facilities and guests.
Implements Warming Station rules and guest restrictions.
Ensures station is clean and manages custodial duties as appropriate.
Remains awake during overnight hours of position to ensure supervision of guests.
Provides fellowship and interaction with guests.
Snow removal may be required, as necessary.
Fills in of normal work schedule as needed.
Must plan to report to scheduled shift regardless of weather conditions.
Assists in the completion of intake paperwork.
Performs other duties as assigned and in accordance with the Chart of Work.

Part Time, Full Time availability
6:30pm - 10:00pm (Available Monday Sunday)
6:30pm - 11:15pm (Available Monday Sunday)
11:00pm - 7:00am (Available Monday Sunday)
Holidays required

Pay Range

$15.00 - $16.50 / hour

Requirements

Associate degree in human services or Social Work preferred.
One or more years of related experience in non-profit. Previous experience with the homeless population preferred, not required.
Must be able to independently problem-solve, manage a variety of circumstances while remaining calm in potentially tricky situations.
Excellent verbal and written communication.
Ability to work with integrity, discretion, and a professional approach, maintaining confidentiality, as necessary.
Bi-lingual (Spanish) preferred, but not required.
Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation).
Must have comfort working on a computer or personal device for guest background checks.
Previous experience with mental health/drug addiction issues, preferred.
Must complete Safe Serv certification.
Must complete CPR with AED, First Aid and NARCAN Training prior to start of position and maintain.
Must complete all Praesidium and Y Link training prior to first scheduled shift.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to use a computer for an abbreviated period and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
The employee frequently is required to sit and reach and must be able to move around the work environment.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Employee must be able to work overnights, weekends, and holidays
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
