GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Provides professional nursing care under supervision for clinic patients.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to Nursing Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Assists with the preparation of equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Observes, records, and reports patients condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians.
  • Performs PFTs, inhalation therapy, EKGs, shots, skin testing, and cultures per office procedures.
  • Sets up billing information, asthma status, and no-show information on all shot records for all new patients going on shots.
  • Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares list of medical supplies needed.
  • Triage calls as needed.
  • Screens doctors messages and makes decisions on patient calls to alleviate the physician workload. Follows protocols as to what decisions can and cannot be made by a LVN.
  • Oversees appointment bookings and ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations. Maintains timely flow of patients.
  • Gives shots and judges reactions promptly and accurately.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in collection of samples and tests.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or physician.

The job holder must demonstrate competencies applicable to the job position.

Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of vocational nursing.

EXPERIENCE: One year of professional nursing experience in a clinic setting preferred.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE: Possession of a current California Vocational Nurse license. Current CPR certification.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of principles and skills needed for vocational nursing to provide patient care.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medications and their effects on patients.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

SKILLS:

  • Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
  • Skill in using various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.

ABILITIES:

  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 35 lbs. Requires corrective vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
