Alternatives Investment Leader


The Alternatives Investment Leader ("AIL")will report to the regional CIO of Investments (responsible for optimizing investment outcomes for both advisory and delegated solution clients) and provides direct people management and leadership for the Alts Investment Directors in the US with a focus on helping Alternative Investment Directors to navigate the broader US Wealth ecosystem to effectively execute in their roles with clarity of objectives and aligned incentives. The AIL is expected to be a subject matter expert to a select number of strategic key client accounts. Manages process and mentor staff to ensure high quality, timely delivery of client deliverables. The AIL works to continually evolve our investment process in collaboration with local and global resources.


Primary responsibilities will be centered around (i) AUM/AUA Growth and (ii) Expertise and Technical Delivery to clients:



AUM / AUA Growth


Supporting new growth and retention of existing clients by:

Focusing on portfolio construction and different modes of implementation (PIP, SMAs, Funds of One, Custom Comingled Vehicles, etc.)
Meeting with existing and prospective clients as part of a Team that generally also includes client management and/or sale representation with the Alts ID positioned as an Alts Investment specialist.
Adeptly speak to the role of alternative investments, market trends, client case studies, historical performance, investment opportunities, etc. to support AUM/revenue growth
Contributing value add input in terms of commercial positioning, pitches, RFP responses etc.
Being a prominent proponent of Mercer alts capabilities and thought leadership through multiple PR/marketing mediums, client & industry channels
Leveraging enablement tools and training protocols to achieve excellence in engaging with consultants, clients and prospects as evident by winning new, profitable business that exceeds annual financial targets.
Leverage experiences and learnings from our delivery to Alts clients and prospects in other geographies


Expertise & Technical Delivery

Strong understanding of all alternatives asset classes with the potential for more in-depth knowledge of specific alternatives asset classes
Partner with US CIO and alts asset class leader to create positive investment & governance outcomes.
Relationship builder and strong influencer, with a proven track record of developing and maintaining robust alliances with key stakeholders across the broader business
Ability to communicate comfortably across asset classes, portfolio construction, manager selection and structuring discussions
Delivers specialty Alts advisory expertise for Core+ and premium clients as well as discretionary mandates for specific Alts asset classes, either on a standalone basis or as part of a bespoke SMA or a multi-asset OCIO solution
Manage a team of Alternative Investment Directors and relevant specialists in the delivery of each of the above and provide leadership and direction to this team as required.
Stay aligned with Alternative Investment Leaders in other geographies to help ensure consistency of deliver efficiency of resource and seamless deliver of our Alts capabilities on a global basis.
Contribute to research and thought leadership via the Alternatives SRT, working in partnership with alternatives asset class intellectual capital leads

Focus on NOI and ensuring strong profitability by:

Serve as a bridge to deeper investment expertise from asset class specialists as needed
Being familiar with Mercers alternative service offerings and able to translate and apply this to meet the needs of individual clients with a focus on scale, and profitability, partnering with the Alts Client Leader.
Jointly manage the Advisory/EOS service offerings with the US Alts Clients Head for all alternative asset classes to mitigate and manage scope creep.

All Marsh McLennan colleagues are expected to be in their local office or working onsite with clients at least three days per week. Office-based teams will identify at least one anchor day per week on which their full team will be together in person.

The applicable base salary range for this role is $224,000 to $336,000.


The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
