Analyzes and converts detailed specifications, and data from project specifications and statements of problems and procedures, to create or modify computer programs. Prepares or receives detailed functional and technical specifications to describe sequence of steps that program must follow and input, output, and logical operations involved. May work with Systems Analyst to obtain and analyze project specifications. Analyzes proposed computer applications in terms of equipment requirements and capabilities. May prepare computer block diagrams and machine logic flowcharts for detailed coding of problems. Writes new programs and analyzes, reviews, and rewrites existing programs to solve problems, increase operating efficiency, or adapt to new requirements. Compiles and writes documentation of program development and subsequent revisions. Prepares test data. Corrects program errors. Documents the methods and procedures used in developing, testing and correcting programs. Writes instructions to guide operating personnel during production runs. Assists in designing programs and systems architecture; preparing program specifications; coding, testing, and debugging computer programs; and interpreting technical information relating to computer programming and other areas of data processing.
