Under the direction of the Purchasing Manager, this position is responsible for purchasing assigned commodities at the lowest total cost that meet our quality standards. The primary commodities for this role will deal with glass doors and condensing units, and will require an individual with a strong technical aptitude. They will lead and participate with contract, cost, supplier management, quality assurance, inventory reduction, and replenishment initiatives. Works directly and collaborates with Operations, Engineering, Scheduling, Accounting and Sales, as well as leads and participates in new product development/introduction, change management, and continuous improvement initiatives for business process improvements. This position will typically work in an office environment but has periodic exposure to manufacturing. This job description lists major areas of responsibility and additional job activities may be added at any time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Minimizes total cost of ownership on commodities assigned through negotiation, consolidation, and implementation of Lean concepts
  • Able to read, comprehend, and communicate changes associated with engineering drawings.
  • Facilitates the interaction between engineering, supply chain, and suppliers to ensure all parties agree with latest drawing revision in a timely manner.
  • Evaluates and manages supplier performance while monitoring inventory levels on commodities or parts assigned
  • Coordinates and carries out contractual supplier commitments
  • Controls and administers purchase order management, which consists of purchase order, placement (discrete and blanket) confirmation, expediting, rescheduling, and cancelling for moderate to expensive raw materials
  • Prepares and sends quote specifications, receives bids and provides a summary of the information collected for analysis and participates in the decision-making process
  • Participates in supplier selection and seeks out cost savings opportunities on an intermediate level
  • Monitors and mitigates non-conforming materials for suppliers assigned
  • Participates in new product development initiatives and implements change request/change orders.
  • Utilizes and maintains business software systems, such as IFS, and Microsoft Office.
  • Personal development to include continuously updating skills related to Materials/Purchasing and the commodities assigned
  • Some travel required

Requirements

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

  • Requires an Associate Degree in a business-related field and/or 3-5 years of experience as a Buyer in a manufacturing environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of purchasing practices, ERP systems, MRP, CPM or APICS certification and Lean concepts is preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word and Outlook)

  • Ability to comprehend complex instructions, both oral and written
  • Ability to understand and interpret purchase orders, customer orders, and related paperwork
  • Ability to effectively communicate one-on-one, in group settings, with suppliers, and with other employees within the organization
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, including the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Must maintain a professional company image
  • Regularly required to use hands, talk and hear
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
