Job Summary:

The Center for Dairy Research at UW-Madison (CDR) is hiring an accountant. CDR is the largest dairy foods research center in the United States. It supports innovation, research and training for the dairy industry. CDR is funded by farmers, industry and federal grants.

The accountant is a member of the CDR administrative team and is responsible for accounting duties following generally accepted accounting principles and procedures. Under general supervision, this position will prepare, review, and conduct complex financial processes. This position requires understanding of numerous campus policies and procedures. The accountant will assist with post-award reporting processes, procurement transactions, and budgeting. The person in this position serves as a key point of contact for CDR on financial matters. The accountant will work with researchers to budget, monitor expenditures, and reconcile financial data for sponsored research and federal awards.


Responsibilities:

Performs general accounting duties following generally accepted accounting principles and procedures. Prepares financial reports and assists with budgeting. Ensures the accurate recording and reporting of the business unit's financial transactions.
  • 20% Organizes, prepares, and updates basic financial statements, monthly and year-end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
  • 25% Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements basic solutions as needed
  • 20% Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
  • 5% Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
  • 10% Assists in preparing budgets and financial projections
  • 5% Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments
  • 15% Tracks and reconciles financial aspects of federal grants and awards such as Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA), U.S. Economic Development Association (EDA), etc.

Education:

Preferred
Associate's Degree in relevant field of study such as accounting or business

Qualifications:

Required:
  • A minimum of one year of accounting experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and Excel.

Preferred:
  • Experience with UW-Madison accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of UW policies and procedures relating to accounting, revenue producing activities, travel, federal grants/awards, payments to individuals, charge back systems and cash management.

Well qualified candidates will possess:
  • Knowledge of computer applications, automated data analysis and data entry techniques.
  • Advanced working knowledge of the full Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing financial data, policy and procedures.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in taking initiative and working independently
  • Ability to remain focused, attend to details, meet deadlines and perform efficiently and effectively under pressure.
  • Familiarity with UW systems such as ShopUW, e-Reimbursement, WISER, etc.
  • Knowledge of University, State, Federal and/or Nonfederal rules and regulations.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
