Summary

The CNC Machinist is routinely assigned to setup and operate manual or CNC machines productively on the most difficult and most complicated and need to apply knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics and machinability of materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Read and interpret blueprint specifications to determine procedures and operational sequence.
  • Set up, adjust and operate machine tools with limited or no supervision.
  • Perform complex machine set ups and critical operations, subject to review.
  • Position and secure workpiece in machine.
  • Position tools in relation to workpiece.
  • Operate various hand tools, power hand tools, and machine tools to make finish adjustments to products.
  • Use a variety of precision measuring devices to set up and adjust work and verify conformance of work to specifications.
  • Examine and feel surface of workpiece for defects.
  • Sharpen cutting tools as needed.
  • Troubleshoot operating, material and tooling problems, working closely with Engineering to resolve tooling and process problems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance work on tools and equipment.
  • Guide in assisting personnel on using correct procedures.
  • Process all necessary documentation and paperwork for processes to be completed.

Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum of a High School Education. Ideally one to three years of skilled trades training in machine tool operations plus one to two years related experience.
  • Language Skills - Ability to read and understand documents such as blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write standard documentation. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
