Overview of Role: To meet the strategic objectives of the organization, lead members of a cross-functional team, including leadership, multiple departments and vendors, focused on the research and development of new products, flavors, and enhancements to current products. Coordinates with production and quality teams to determine how to execute and trouble-shoot.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • New product and concept development / Innovation Leads, facilitates, and partners with a cross-functional team, including Marketing, Sales, Operations, Leadership team(s), and others to develop unique, innovative, and exciting product concepts that are on-strategy and draw the consumer to our brand.
  • Formulation development (food science)- Plans, formulates, and directs the product development activities to execute the vision.
  • Contract manufacturing (CM) - Communicating specifications to contract manufacturers and ensuring that the CMs abilities and competencies align with organizations needs.
  • Private Label Experience in working on private label snack programs a plus.
  • Coordinates team to define key trends in the market for flavors and product strategy, and modifications or improvements to current formulations.
  • Drives continuous improvements related to formulation optimization.
  • Coordinate with the ops team to meet all defined timelines.
  • Documentation requirements for all products.
  • Scale products from small batch to production (recipe differences, formulation adjustments, availability of materials, production processes).
  • Defines product attributes with focus on optimal quality and value of ingredients.
  • Works with internal/external operations team to determine technical feasibility of each item/project.
  • Leads the development team to execute the initial, small-batch samples for internal evaluation.
  • Working on getting products certified as appropriate.
  • Coordinates with others to ensure nutrition, labeling, product claims (Kosher, gluten-free, vegan, non-gmo, etc) are accurate and meet Federal Regulations, as well as company strategic goals.
  • An understanding of overall quality parameters chemical, physical, microbiological.
  • Coordinate schedule for sample trials
  • Provide product specification sheets for production.
  • Experience working in a production facility a plus.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemistry, or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the food and beverage industry, with at least 3 years in R&D management.
  • Strong knowledge of food science and food manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proven track record of leading successful product development projects.
  • Familiarity with food safety regulations and requirements.
