Grace Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, is seeking a new COO/CNO to provide leadership, strategic guidance and management direction to all aspects of the Long Term Acute Care hospitals operations while providing and improving interdisciplinary care, treatment and services to long-term acute care patients experiencing medically complex conditions and general medical-surgical conditions with rehabilitation and/or wound care needs. The facility operates to meet the needs of patients requiring extended acute medical care.

Grace Hospital is a not-for-profit registered Acute Long-Term Care Hospital, the first of its kind to be established in Cuyahoga County. They are Medicare and Medicaid certified and fully accredited by the Joint Commission. As an Acute Long-Term Care Hospital, our reimbursement from Medicare & Medicaid is based on Acute Care Days, rather than Skilled Nursing Days. Our services are also honored by most private insurers.. They seek caregivers who are compassionate, competent, and results-oriented to join our team. The COO/CNO is responsible for providing, managing, and supervising the clinical staff ensuring that the competency, numbers and staff levels are appropriate to meet the immediate and complex needs of patients.

The COO/CNO is accountable for safe and quality patient care, developing and managing to a financially sound annual operating budget and long-term capital expenditure plan, hiring and retaining qualified and productive clinical and support staff, managing risk, leading performance improvement ensuring overall quality of nursing care, maintaining effective relationships with Boards, medical staff, patients, employees, the community and the corporate office. In conjunction with the professional staff, the COO/CNO plans, coordinates, manages and evaluates clinical programs and services of the LTACH, promoting a team approach to the delivery of patient care provided by the LTACH

Major Responsibilities

  • Establishes and communicates a clear and compelling vision, establishing the policies, procedures and the standards of nursing practice.
  • Works with the Board, senior management team, physicians and staff to develop, implement, and update strategies and opportunities for growth and improvement to support the hospitals mission and respond to external and internal issues.
  • Is responsible for the operational, strategic, financial and clinical performance of the hospital.
  • Provides for a system of control which clearly identifies deviations from plans and budgets; assure periodic comparison of performance and/or results against established standards for objectives; and assure corrective actions for deviation from plans so that annual results are in line with strategic goals.
  • Maintains the hospitals compliance with all regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Assesses and plans for effective patient flow process by evaluating the available supply of patient bed space, efficiency of patient care, treatment and services; safety of patient care, treatment and service areas and support service processes that impact patient flow.
  • Management of human resources for all clinical departments includes providing an adequate number of staff; providing competent staff; orientation, training and education of staff; and assessing, maintaining and improving staff competence. The CNO has responsibility for employee growth and development, recruitment and retention, reward and recognition.
  • Determines staffing requirements and ensures the availability of adequate numbers of competent staff (including contract labor) that are properly credentialed, educated, trained, motivated and engaged.
  • Establishes personal and professional credibility and an environment of trust, candor and genuine two way communications.
  • Serves as a positive role model and mentor.
  • Attracts and retains physicians; maintain high levels of physician satisfaction.
  • Provides hospital operations coaching and/or mentoring.
  • Takes a proactive approach to managed care, healthcare reform and related issues.
  • Develops new business opportunities.
  • Participates in and represents the hospital in professional, civic, and service organizations.

General Duties

  • Participates in meetings that affect the hospital
  • Is actively committed to quality of patient care, treatment and services.
  • Measures and reports quality results to hospital and corporate teams.
  • Fosters continuous quality improvement. Participates in corporate-wide and hospital-based performance improvement activities.
  • Keeps abreast of new legislative information that impacts the acute care venue
  • Other duties as required


Safety and Quality of Care: Promotes quality by incorporating current nationally recognized professional standards and other expert literature into policies and procedures. Acts to implement changes to resolve identified problems, improve safety and quality of care and maintain patient rights. Responsible for the integration of nursing services into the organizations quality assessment and performance improvement program.

Operations Management: Collects and analyzes data from internal and external sources regarding current way of doing business and clinical processes. Conducts needs analysis, identifies and prioritizes needs, applies good problem solving skills. Identifies alternate processes and potential solutions and acts to implement changes to improve operations.

Medical Staff: Collaborates with the Medical Staff to identify and resolve issues affecting the provision of overall patient care in the Hospital. Fosters open and effective communication between patients, nursing and medical staff to resolve problems and remove barriers to physicians admitting and referring patients to the hospital. Promotes harmonious relationships among nursing, medical staff, patients and the public.

Communication and Relationship: Builds rapport and trust with the team through frequent/timely communication. Develops and maintains effective medical staff relationships. Works with community leaders as appropriate to assess community healthcare needs, build a positive hospital image and market hospital services. Actively participates in his/her community through civic and other service. Demonstrates appropriate political savvy, tact and diplomacy.

Talent Development: Wants people to develop. Accurately assesses developmental needs and provides frequent feedback, coaching, and personal development opportunities. Faces up to performance and behavior problems quickly and directly. Does not shy from providing timely corrective feedback. Takes action promptly to remove talent that is non-responsive to coaching and developmental activity.

Accountability: Sets clear, consistent goals and expectations. Holds self and others accountable for decisions and actions. Demands high performance and creates an ownership culture.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Masters Degree in a healthcare related field such as MHA/MBA/MPH/MS, or a BS in a healthcare related field with a business related masters, or the equivalent in education and experience. Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited University program.
  • Must possess and maintain current unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse by the state of employment.
  • 5-7 years progressively more responsible experience at the senior administrative level.
  • LTACH or similar experience required. CNO experience required. COO experience is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of direct patient care experience in a post-acute or acute care setting is required.
  • Post-acute patient care experience is highly desirable. Critical care experience preferred.
  • Must show evidence of competency in supervising patient care services through a minimum of 2 years of management experience.
  • Must have a track record of effective operational, financial, business development, and strategic skills.
  • Must have a track record of proactively developing positive relationships with physicians, employees, Board members and community leaders.
