Description

Gryphon Scientific is seeking a Director for our Data Science Practice area to run all facets of the practice, including managing staff, serving as an experienced technical leader to lead/advise on projects, and helping develop a business development pipeline. Across these functions, the Data Science Practice Director will spearhead leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), especially as they intersect with Gryphons deep expertise in science, particularly biological science. Applicants must have proven background in these dimensions and an entrepreneurial mindset.

We seek a Data Science Practice Director who is passionate about AI/ML, current with the latest developments in the field, and has a demonstrated ability to leverage AI/ML methods to answer complex domain-specific questions or address client problems. The Data Science Director also should be skilled in statistics and programming and has knowledge of data science and software engineering. managing large scale projects, mentoring and developing less experienced staff, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. We are looking for a leader with a demonstrated track record of success in client-focused business development in AI/ML. Additionally, Gryphon has an existing line of business in AI policy, and candidates with experience in understanding the role of AI in society will be a welcomed addition to this focus area.

Candidates will have a degree with a focus on ML or adjacent fields including computer science, physics, life science analytics, statistics/mathematics, or an engineering discipline; a minimum of ten years' experience in a government or business environment; and a record of successful applications or publications (peer reviewed, white papers, and/or government reports) in AI/ML. Candidates with a primary focus in AI/ML and additional expertise in life science or science policy are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duties

  • Serve as a strategic thinker and business leader capable of providing vision and direction for growth of the Data Science Practice area through business development, staff recruitment, and project management.
  • Manage practice area operations by balancing labor demand and availability for staff in the Data Science practice area, including for Data Science projects and projects conducted in collaboration with Gryphon's other practice areas. Achieving balance will entail collaborating with peers on labor planning, hiring new staff, and development of new business.
  • Serve as a personnel manager to staff in the Data Science Practice area (currently a growing team of five people, several of whom have advanced education and experience in statistics, bioengineering, and computational biology). In their capacity as personnel manager, the Director will serve as a coach and mentor to staff, including supporting growth in their technical skills. As the practice area expands, the Director will develop and support a system for continued management, mentorship and personnel growth.
  • Serve as a technical lead on challenging analytic projects that involve developing and implementing AI & ML algorithms and tools to address problems in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics and bioinformatics and additional areas of focus for Gryphon related to global health and security.
  • Serve as a successful technical lead on proposals and projects that increase the scope and/or scale of data science work at Gryphon.
  • Provide leadership, technical direction, and creative strategic plans for successful business development efforts primarily in the federal government.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Vice President of Research to provide input to the development of company practices, policies, and operational modes, and promote implementation of company policies and practices within the practice area (or among practice area staff).

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree with a focus on ML or adjacent fields including computer science, physics, life science analytics, statistics/mathematics, or an engineering discipline
  • A minimum of 10 years' experience in a U.S. government or business environment
  • A minimum of 5 years experience as a personnel manager
  • A record of successful applications or written products in AI/ML
  • A record of successful client-focused business development in data science and AI/ML
  • U.S. Citizen

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of the U.S. government contracting environment and demonstrated experience developing and leading government-sponsored work involving AI/ML
  • Proven track record in business development or funding acquisition focused on client-focused solutions using data science, with a focus on AI/ML
  • Successful track record implementing AI/ML methods across multiple projects
  • Significant experience working with large data sets and mastery of at least one programming language
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support staff growth in technical excellence, project management/execution, business development skills, and individual professional growth
  • Experience with version control management systems (such as git)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Domain expertise relevant to Gryphon's work in the life sciences, such as public health, epidemiology, or life science analytics including biostatistics and bioinformatics
  • Experience with multiple programming languages (Python, R, C++, Java, etc.)
  • Experience implementing and managing team-based software development efforts
  • Ability to acquire and maintain an active security clearance

Travel Requirement:

This position may require travel multiple times per year, for up to a week each time, to support in-person meetings with clients and staff or project related objectives/activities. Travel may be required to countries with vaccination requirements for entry to support specific project work.
