In collaboration with the Senior Director of Institutional Giving, the Director of Institutional Giving will develop and manage a well-coordinated, strategic plan for growing Foundation and Government funding that supports the High Lines annual operations, programs, strategic initiatives, and capital projects. The Director is responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and retaining a portfolio of current and prospective Foundation and Government (local, state, and federal) funders totaling approximately $2 million, and is positioned to grow significantly over the next five years.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Institutional Giving, this role is a critical Development and Advancement team member that provides the opportunity to employ strategies that will shape the future of the High Line at a pivotal point in its history. The Director regularly interfaces with the High Lines Senior Leadership Team, establishes annual income goals for the Foundation and Government portfolios, and cultivates and maintains relationships with Institutional partners in order to meet or exceed these goals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Evaluate current Foundation and Government strategies and develop and execute a growth plan for the next three to five years based on organizational priorities
  • Act as point of contact for a curated portfolio of Foundation and Government prospects and partners
  • Guide the stewardship process for Foundation and Government support to strengthen existing relationships and to foster new partnerships
  • Create customized solicitation strategies for Foundation and Government funders that match the objectives of the organization and interests of the identified prospect; partner with internal staff and provide expertise regarding Foundation and Government funding opportunities
  • Act as a point of contact with lobbyist consultants, helping to develop a strategy, in partnership with the Executive Director and Senior Leadership Team, for the High Lines approach to government funding
  • Collaborate with work across departments, especially the:
    • Program team, to advise on programming that appeals to funders and that further the High Lines mission and strategic goals
    • Finance and Program teams, to ensure organizational compliance
    • Community Engagement team, on aspects of every-day government relations and outreach
  • In collaboration with the Senior Writer, Institutional Giving, ensure all Foundation and Government funding proposals and reporting materials are expertly crafted and submitted in accordance with grants calendar
  • Create and/or update internal processes for various work flows of the Institutional Giving team, which includes a Senior Writer, Institutional Giving, and Coordinator, Institutional Giving
  • Assign prospect research projects within the team as necessary
  • Represent the High Line at a variety of community events and functions, as required

Requirements

Desired experience of a successful candidate may include the following, but candidates will not be screened exclusively based on meeting these qualifications:

Ideal Experience

  • Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 6+ years of frontline fundraising and grant-seeking experience with Foundations and Government sources at mid/large-sized nonprofits, successfully securing institutional funding and exceeding contributed income goals in a competitive fundraising environment
  • Exceptional writing skills and experience in grant writing
  • Deep understanding of Foundation and Government partner relationships in city and regional level with a strong interest and awareness at a national level
  • Experience with, and comfort in, delivering funder pitches
  • Superb attention to detail and time management, and organizational skills, including the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as presentation and public speaking skills
  • Ability to maintain positive and collaborative relationships with funders, colleagues, and leadership
  • Strong planning, strategy, financial, budgeting, and analytical skills
  • A positive attitude and solution-oriented mindset

Preferred Experience (but not required)

  • Grantseeking experience for organization(s) centered in one or more of the following: arts and culture, green initiatives, public spaces, education, parks, and/or landmark buildings
  • Prior management experience
  • High level of computer literacy, including experience with Google platforms and Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Asana or similar project management software
  • Experience with Raisers Edge or similar fundraising database

Abilities

  • Ability to make quick decisions and act with minimal direction while knowing when to escalate an issue or ask for support from upper management
  • Ability to cope with ambiguity, complexity, and change in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment

This is a Full-Time, Exempt position, Year-Round Role.

Actual salaries will vary on various factors, including but not limited to experience and performance. The annual salary range is $90,000 to $100,000.

The location for the role remains hybrid, with a requirement to physically report to the office (located in Manhattan's Meatpacking District in New York City).
