The Role

The Communications Leader is global in scope, we are seeking someone in the Eastern Standard time zone (EST) as the role will be hybrid in nature. Travel (25%) will be required with the expectation of being in the Detroit, MI office approximately one week/month.

What you'll be able to do

  • Responsible for developing/implementing Canopy comms strategies and messaging both internally and externally
  • Help deliver/implement the comprehensive Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) strategy/goals
  • Develop and deliver demand creation plans, issue mgmt and recruitment plans; handling media relations, media inquiries and Q&As
  • Lead any crisis comms tied to all areas of Canopy
  • Build/implement comms tied to the strengths of Canopy teams or individuals
  • Develop and mentor internal/external team members
  • Initially this role is a senior-level individual contributor with the potential to add team members to support company growth and need.

The Person

Canopy is open to diverse experience, though prefers a corporate background. Individual must bring strategic comms skills, understanding of the intersection between comms, marketing, sales, business development and corporate strategy and a history of developing integrated, business-aligned campaigns. They will have deep relationships with employees, influencers, key opinion leaders, and media - and a strategic understanding of how to engage those collaborators, shape perceptions, and support key business objectives.

Operating as a strategist, this leader will have an ability to work collaboratively across Canopy teams, a history working across cross-functional partners/outside collaborators, and experience with both products and technology in a dynamic, constantly evolving company/sector.

Brings a strong understanding of team management and support, with validated experience building and growing team capabilities. Open to someone who has yet to hold an analogous in-house, strategic role, providing they have the skills, relationships and credibility and can navigate a complex, global organization while remaining flexible and creative enough to change directions with business strategies that can be as dynamic as a start-up.

Requirements

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of study
  • 5+ yrs proven experience in successful internal/external comms strategy ownership, with outstanding written/verbal communication skills and PM experience, for a corporate and/or public relations/affairs agency
  • 10+ yrs advanced experience in corporate brand marketing, reputation mgmt, issue-based comms, crisis mgmt, digital tools and influencing via social media

Our preferred requirements:

  • MS degree in an appropriate field of study
  • Data driven approach consisting of seeking and analyzing data from diverse sources to support decisions and direction
  • An ambitious approach to developing innovative ideas to stretch the org and push boundaries within the industry
  • Ability to balance the need for broad change while understanding how much change the org can support to build realistic goals/implementation plans adding new value to the business and supporting Canopys goals
  • Ability to set clear and challenging communication goals while committing the organization to ever-improving performance and accountability in getting results
  • A risk-taker who seeks data/input to foresee possible threats or unintended circumstances from decisions, driving alignment among internal/external partners
  • A high degree of integrity and thought in their decision-making approach with the ability to act openly while considering what is best for the organization
  • A diverse and inclusive thinker who can deliver comms strategies against multiple brands simultaneous to launching new businesses, as needed
  • Influences/learns from people with a diverse set of backgrounds, in different fields and at multiple levels; builds positive collaborations, demonstrates empathy, and communicates clearly and persuasively
