Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a Director of Safety and Security to oversee our School Security division at a clients site in Washington D.C. The Director of Safety and Security assists the district with its mission to provide the highest quality of education by providing for the safety and security of all students, staff, and property. The Director of Safety and Security develops programs and provides services which will promote a safe and orderly environment for all students to ensure the Schools Promise of a Culture of Equity, Excellence, and Proficiency to empower all students to realize their full potential and lead fulfilling lives as lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and leaders in the 21st Century.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serve as Incident Command for all emergencies
  • Serves as the schools liaison to the local Police Department, Fire Department, and other law enforcement and emergency management related agencies
  • Be on-call 24/7 to respond to and/or coordinate safety and security emergencies, including weather related events
  • Supervise all Campus Safety Officers (CSOs)
  • Serve as subject-matter expert on security and crime related issues and maintain best practice information relative to safety and security
  • Create and issue department policies
  • Update and develop schools Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) that would help direct emergency responses
  • Act as a consultant for the Head of School
  • Attend weekly meetings with Head of School, Operations Team, and Facilities Team
  • Manage and approve invoices
  • Manage Towing services
  • Lead Investigations of criminal or other internal matters
  • Investigate employee complaints
  • Schedule and lead school required drills- Lockdown, Emergency Evacuation, and Severe Weather Drills
  • Manage portable radio equipment, dispatch console and software, card access and access levels, cameras, software, and video footage
  • Design and manage panic-buttons on campus
  • Conduct Security Assessments at both the Maryland and DC campuses
  • Displays the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the schools
  • Create and present Safety presentation to AT, Faculty, staff and students
  • Create and present Safety presentations to parents-both campuses
  • Create and present Presentations to the Board Trustees and FISC committee
  • Advises architectural design teams for construction and renovation projects relative to school safety
  • In collaboration with School administration, administers the Safety and Security budget to ensure safety and security in the school and by the most cost-effective utilization of resources.
  • Assist with Threat Assessments of Students, Staff and Faculty
  • Provide safety and security presentations for Summer Program staff.
  • Complete/Update District of Columbia Fire and Drill log for the school
  • Oversees and coordinated the no trespass notifications for the school
  • Adheres to federal statutes and regulations, school law, Board of Education rules and regulations, School Committee policies and procedures, and contractual obligations; and
  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Divisional and/or Regional Security Director


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree
  • Have at least five (5) years of relevant experience, in safety and/or security required in a school environment, preferably a tuition-charging private or public school within an urban district.
  • At least three (3) years supervisory experience, including assigning, managing, and evaluating staff required.
  • At least three (3) years recent successful leadership or administrator experience in field relevant to the position required
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Hazmat training preferred.
  • Have extensive work with law enforcement agencies.
  • Be able to work with police and safety personnel as well as school district staff; be team oriented while capable of working independently; and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with administrators, teachers, staff, and parents in a diverse school community.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with time sensitive deadlines.
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Have knowledge of school law, DESE regulations, and school policy and procedures.
  • Demonstrate skills in planning, research, and management.
  • Hold and maintain a valid drivers license with no serious violations.
  • Be available for rapid response in emergency, crisis, or weather-related situations.
  • Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
  • Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
  • Be able to plan and present information to a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and exhibit strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate high integrity and an exceptional work ethic.
  • Experience using and managing access control systems.
  • Experience using and managing video recording and camera systems.
  • Experience using and managing building entry and visitor management systems.

Salary Range: $125k-$135k (can be increased dependent upon education, experience, licenses, and certifications)
